The kinder, gentler gaslighters

Remember when Jeremy Corbyn said he wanted a find a less abusive way of doing politics?

And how the commentariat class absolutely ridiculed him for it, using the phrase "kinder gentler politics" whenever anyone from the left as much as used a swear word, despite Corbyn himself remaining calm, polite, and dignified in the face of undoubtedly the most concerted UK media vilification campaign in living memory.

The political establishment class and corporate media hack pack worked together to whip up raging firestorms of anti-left hatred; they accused Corbyn of disrespecting veterans by not bowing deeply enough at the Cenotaph; the next year they faked photos of Corbyn supposedly dancing at the Cenotaph; they faked photos of him wearing a Russian-style hat on a Kremlin background; they endlessly platformed every deranged anti-Corbyn ranter they could find; they spliced the wrong answers onto different questions to create outrage-mongering 'fake news' (and kept their jobs when caught red-handed); they derided Corbyn's "Chairman Mao style bicycle"; they spread nonsensical conspiracy theories about Corbyn being some kind of Czech Spy, Russian stooge, terrorism-loving, communist, Jew-hater; they ridiculed and grossly misrepresented virtually every policy position Corbyn ever took ("nationalise sausages"!); and they churned out endless hate-mongering rabble-rousing articles like "Labour Must Kill Vampire Jezza".

Just some of the political and media figures to switch
seamlessly from vilifying Corbyn to pretending they
oppose online hatred and abuse!
Then oh how they erupted in fits of laughter and frivolity when Corbyn was violently assaulted by that right-wing extremist; and how they chuckled and then instantly forgot about it when British soldiers used Corbyn's face as a target on a shooting range; and then they just ignored the multiple assaults on elderly Labour Party campaigners during the 2019 election (whilst uncritically amplifying outright Tory lies about Matt Hancock's aide supposedly being "punched" by a Corbyn-supporter).

To top it all off, they barely even bothered to object to the terrorist assassination plot against Corbyn and Sadiq Khan by the extreme-right Finsbury Park killer; or any of the numerous other examples of abuse and death threats against Corbyn and the Labour leadership team.

In fact their priorities were so utterly warped that they created vastly more faux outrage about a so-called "brick" through Angela Eagle's window in 2016, despite no evidence of who actually did it ever emerging, than coverage of an actual death threat made against Corbyn in the same week as brick-gate!

The political establishment and the commentariat class deliberately whipped up these firestorms of hatred because they detested normal democratic socialist policies like nationalised rail, energy, and water so much, and outright rejected the idea that the very-rich should just pay a bit more into the pot.

Then when their hate-mongering delivered the inevitable abusive, violent, and potentially deadly consequences, they simply turned their backs, refused to report it, belittled it, or even outright laughed at it.

Well now the very same people are all suddenly saying they want a 'kinder, gentler politics' in order to promote a right-wing authoritarian Tory crackdown on our Internet freedoms.

The gaslighting bastards!

NOTE: Of course these people and their supporters will resort to victim posturing, and pretending that proven facts about the vilification of Corbyn, and the conclusion "gaslighting bastards!" constitute the kind of horrifying abuse they're suddenly so concerned about. They didn't get where they were within the establishment order without knowing how to distort and manipulate everything to their advantage.

Why do so many people get offended at facts they don't like?

Who is Ross Greer?

Well according to Twitter he's a "laughing ginger turd", a "horrible little bastard", an "arrogant fool", a "pompous little toad", a "smirking offensive little twat", an "absolute fucking weapon", a "sneering sniggering little twat", a "horrible and hateful little shit", "a silly ginger cunt",  a "little idiot", a "snide spoilt little boy", an "ugly ginger little snowflake cunt", a "little liberal ginger jihadist", a "pompous weasel", a " stupid little dumb shit ginger", a "massive bell end", a "disrespectful ginger mutant", "the reason ginger people get picked on", a "slimy nonce ginger cunt", "just a prick", and "everything that's wrong with this country these days"!

Blimey you might think. He must have done something pretty bloody bad to trigger such a massive outpouring of hate.

But you'd be wrong. All Ross Greer tried to do was to provide a bit of historical perspective on the legacies of Winston Churchill by talking about issues like Churchill's contempt for the working classes and his role in the Bengal famine.

However the problem with attempting to use facts and evidence to critique prevailing narratives like the lionisation of Churchill is that in modern Britain an awful lot of people get extremely angry and offended when confronted with facts that they don't like.

Of course Churchill deserves credit for getting some things right. When the Tory party and almost the entire British establishment class became utterly fixated by the lure of fascism in the 1930s Churchill was one of the few amongst them who defied this shocking trend because he rightly saw fascism as the danger it was.

And once he became Prime Minister Churchill recognised the crucial strategic importance of bringing both Russia and the United States into the war on Britain's side.

A more ideologically driven anti-communist (of which there were very many in the British establishment at the time) could have simply watched Russia fall under Nazi control rather than actively supporting the Soviet Union with the Arctic Convoys in order to keep Hitler's forces divided and fighting on multiple fronts as Churchill did.

Churchill was a sadistic Tory. He set the British army on striking workers in Scotland and south Wales, he had racist views on imperialist conquest, he was utterly indifferent to the starvation of millions of people in Bengal to the point of joking about why Gandhi hadn't died in it, he sent the black and tans to Ireland, before the war he'd been a supporter of poison gas and concentration camps, and after the war his government brutally repressed the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya through collective punishment, torture and castration.

But on the other hand when fascism was so trendy that his Tory colleagues were signing up in droves to anti-Semitic groups like the Right Club, and the royal family were indoctrinating the young Elizabeth to give Nazi salutes in their palace gardens, Churchill was one of the few amongst his peers to buck that horrifying trend.

The man was an enigma who is understandably glorified by many as a great war leader, but equally understandably detested by others because of his brutality and sadism.

And as Churchill himself once said "The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is".

But by telling the truth about some of Churchill's darker legacies on national television, the relatively obscure MSP Ross Greer has triggered an absolute tsunami of hatred and abuse from people who are offended by his facts.

Just look at Piers Morgan's conduct during the interview.

Instead of following a reasonably impartial line of questioning Morgan worked himself up into such a fit of rage that he couldn't even listen to the words that Greer was saying.

And this extraordinary adult tantrum was performed by a man who routinely denounces people on the left as being over-sensitive "snowflakes" who get offended by reality!

Suzanna Reid's behaviour was perhaps even more extraordinary than Morgan's when she brazenly straw-manned Greer's argument by plucking a comparison with Hitler out of thin air, and then described Greer's facts as "offensive".

It's not our TV presenters' role to invite people on their shows just to shout them down, lie about their argument, and dismiss their facts as "offensive". That's more of a circus than anything resembling informed debate.

And if our television presenters behave in this extraordinary manner, is it any wonder that members of the public also get so offended by facts that they don't like that they take to Twitter to hurl torrents of personal abuse at the deliverer of said facts?

Amongst the torrents of witless abuse one criticism of Ross Greer was particularly telling. After telling Ross to "fuck off" one of the triggered snowflakes claimed that Greer is "everything that's wrong with this country nowadays".

In reality the real problem with this country is glaringly obvious.

The problem is that there are huge numbers of people out there who get unbelievably angry at facts they don't like, who spew torrents of hate at anyone who dares talk about the facts they don't like, and who vote for dumb shit like giving the Tory party the green light to conduct a "make it up as we go along" Brexit farce because they absolutely refuse to listen to the facts that they don't like.

The problem with modern Britain isn't that Churchill was a racist and sadistic imperialist, because that's now history.

Neither is the problem that some people want to introduce a tiny bit of historical balance by highlighting the fact that as well as being the war leader who led Britain in the fight against Nazism, Churchill was also a racist and sadistic imperialist, because that's simply the truth.

The problem is that we're becoming a nation full of emotionally unstable and over-opinionated adult toddlers who feel entitled to publicly abuse anyone who offends them with facts they don't like.

And the torrents of abuse aimed at Ross Greer suggests that this over-sensitive snowflakery isn't actually a left-wing thing either, coming mainly from right-wingers and ultranationalists.

Maybe this lot actually want to live in a country where it's considered normal behaviour for people to online bully a person to the extent of furiously smearing him as a paedophile, simply because they find his facts offensive?

But the damage these tantrum-throwing adult-toddlers are doing to the standard of political discourse, and to the nation as a whole, is pretty damned obvious to the rest of us.

Right-wingers keep resorting to abuse and smears because they know they'd lose the debate on policy

Next time some pro-austerity, pro-privatisation right-winger calls you "cultist", or "dog", or "trot", or "thug", or "anti-Semite" or "brainwashed" just because you support Labour's return to it's democratic socialist values under Jeremy Corbyn, just remember that it's because these people are absolutely terrified of debating you on policy.
  • They know that Britain desperately needs a solution to the housing crisis that goes way beyond the neoliberal "leave it to market forces" dogma of the last four decades that's created this outrageous mess.

They know Labour's democratic socialist policies under Corbyn are actually popular, so they resort to insults, smears, abuse, lies, whatever they can dig up ... to stop people talking about Labour's policies.

They know that the more they can get people talking about smears (either repeating them or by debunking them) and slinging abuse and lies around, the less focus will fall on actual policies.

And that's exactly the way they want it.

They want to deliberately degrade political discourse, because they see it as the only way they can stop people from thinking about how Britain should be a better and fairer place where we look after vulnerable people, the young, and the elderly ... rather than systematically abusing them, denying them a future, and slashing funding for the care services they spent a lifetime paying for through their taxes.

So just remember that it's actually a really good sign that this rudimentary muck-slinging abuse is all they've got. Try not to engage with the bullies, definitely avoid retorting with insults of your own (because these people are notorious cry-bullies), and above all stay focused on doing what they don't want you to be doing; talking about the democratic socialist policies to make Britain a better and fairer place.

How the mainstream media are burning ordinary people on their anti-Corbyn bonfire of hate

Last week the Sky News reporter Lewis Goodall turned up in Stoke to vox pop a load of people who were queuing to get into a Jeremy Corbyn speech. One of the people he spoke to accidentally said that Jeremy Corbyn had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (instead of the Sean McBride Peace Prize).

Goodall then included this short clip in a compilation deriding the "cult of Corbyn". The piece then went mega viral on Twitter with right-wingers and the usual 'centrist' bullies absolutely dog-piling the poor woman for her stupidity.

What nobody was ever told amongst this outpouring of hatred, contempt and derision was that the woman in question had quickly realised her mistake, then asked Lewis Goodall not to use the clip where she misspoke.

He ran it anyway.

Of course running a clip when a member of the public has asked you not to because they realised they'd misspoken betrays an extreme lack of journalistic ethics on Lewis Goodall's part, but this isn't really the main issue.

The main problem is the way the mainstream media and a bunch of vile Twitter bullies savagely attacked a random member of the public in a desperate proxy attack on Jeremy Corbyn.

We've all seen the shocking levels of anti-Corbyn bias in the mainstream media. The way they endlessly promote absolute rubbish like not bowing-deeply enough, fake photoshop pictures to make it look like he was dancing, the Czech spy nonsense, the Russian stooge nonsense, the wreath nonsense ... all in order to distract public attention away from the grotesque track record of the Tory government they're trying to protect.

Corbyn has shown that he's strong enough to withstand these attacks, and left-wing public figures like me have gradually learned to withstand the regular tides of insults, abuse, defamatory accusations, lies, and threats from right-wingers and so-called 'centrists' (Labour right-wingers being about on a par with Ukippers for abusive blind fury responses to information and opinions they don't like).

But it's a completely different story when the anti-Corbyn mob turn their hatred on a random member of the public in a desperate attempt to portray everyone who supports Jeremy Corbyn and his democratic socialist policies as members of some kind of stupid cult.

Despite asking that the clip not be broadcast, the poor woman has been reduced to ruins, anxiety, and depression. Ashamed that she's been made to look so stupid, and even more ashamed at the damage she feels her seven second peace prize comment has done to Jeremy Corbyn and the mass movement for democratic socialism.

If mainstream media hacks and Twitter bullies are prepared to do this to an ordinary member of the public as part of their vendetta against Jeremy Corbyn, who on earth would trust them to speak out on behalf of ordinary members of the public when they're suffering systematic persecution by the government, wage repression, draconian sanctions, the effects of Tory austerity dogma, or anything else?

Theresa May is crying about "abuse and intimidation" after she hired the "Enemies of the People" guy!

Theresa May is pushing hard for new laws to criminalise protest against the government by pretending that she's opposed to abuse and intimidation in public life because it constitutes a "threat to democracy".

If we think back to the fact that fake news was the last great threat to democracy the Tories were frothing about, it's deeply ironic that this latest call for a crackdown on non-violent political protest is built on the foundation of the right-wing fake news epidemic that followed the Jacob Rees-Mogg protest, which was framed as left-wing activists attacking Jacob Rees-Mogg, when in reality the violence was instigated by a Rees-Mogg supporting goon (who likes to dress up as a Nazi in his spare time) against the noisy but non-violent protesters.

Even if we ignore the fake news foundations that this latest Tory attempt to silence those who would criticise them, it's incredibly difficult to take Theresa May's sudden concerns over "threats and intimidation in public life" seriously.
  • Theresa May was the Home Secretary who sent divisive and intimidatory "Go Home" vans around ethnically diverse areas (a play for the bigoted extreme-right vote so brazen it was even described as "too much" and "un-British" by Nigel Farage and the Ukippers!)
  • Then there's the fact that Theresa May actually hired the Daily Mail hack who wrote the intimidatory "Enemies of the People" front page story as her press secretary. She clearly thinks that someone so vile that they would abuse and intimidate high court judges for doing their jobs is perfectly fine, as long as he's slinging his abuse and intimidation at her opponents (opposition parties, activists, judges, academics, anyone who stands in the way of her hard-right anti-democratic interpretation of Brexit).
  • Then there's the numerous waves of abuse and death threats hurled at any Tory MP who dares to cast doubt on Theresa May's Brextremism. These grotesque intimidation tactics are used by the extreme-right ultranationalist blue-kipper demographic that Theresa May has welcomed into the Tory party with open arms. She knows that these waves of death threats are being sent by her own supporters, but she's repeatedly turned a blind eye to it, and has chosen instead to declare her concerns about "abuse and intimidation" in the wake of an anti-left fake news story concocted by the regularly abusive hard-right freaks at Breitbart and the Guido Fawkes blog!
So the next time you hear Theresa May expressing her transparently fake concerns over abuse and intimidation in public life, remember that throughout her career she's been willing to utilise intimidation and political abuse to her own ends, even to the extent of hiring the "Enemies of the People" guy as her press secretary!

Politicians & journalists need to consider their own roles in toxifying the political environment

Just imagine if an independent left-wing website had published an article from a self-confessed Holocaust denier that featured brazen displays of sexism and anti-Semitism like the Sunday Times just did.

You know as well as I do that the right-wing media would pick up on the article and use it to smear the entire left as a bunch of misogynistic and anti-Semitic bigots, and to generate the absurd narrative that it's abusive and violent fanaticism in politics is solely a left-wing issue.

When the Sunday Times published an extraordinary article from the controversialist Kevin Myers which was dripping with sexism (repeated claims that women don't earn enough because they're not as driven, logical or masterful as men) and casual anti-semitism (allusion to the age old greedy money-grabbing Jew trope) they simply expected to get away with it as if printing such casual bigotry is just "fair comment".

We all know that we would never hear the end of it if some Corbyn-supporting site had hosted such brazenly sexist and anti-Semitic content, but because it's one of Rupert Murdoch's propaganda sheets, we're all supposed to be mollified with the deletion of the article and the explanation that it was just a "mistake" (as if commissioning a Holocaust denier to write an article full of bigoted stereotypes and then publishing it is the kind of mistake we've all made in our lives).

The bigoted Times column that would have had
right-wingers howling with outrage if such sexism
and anti-Semitism had appeared on a left-wing blog.
The most shocking thing about the article isn't that it was written (we all know there are still loads of sexists, racists and anti-Semites out there) but the fact that a supposedly reputable newspaper saw fit to publish such outright bigotry.

It tells you everything you need to know about the cultural acceptance of sexism and anti-Semitism at the Sunday Times that they actually commissioned an article from a known Holocaust denier and nobody at all saw fit to raise concerns about the extreme bigotry in the article as it went through the editing and publishing process.

Of course anyone who pays attention to the political environment knows that most of the hateful and violent extremism comes from the political right. We know that it was an extreme-right "Britain First" screaming fanatic who murdered Jo Cox, that the three people jailed for bombarding the Labour MP Luciana Berger with anti-Semitic abuse were all extreme-right fanatics not "lefties", and that the Finsbury Park terror attack suspect was a Britain First follower, and that his attack was wildly celebrated in the Britain First hate chamber.

Then there's the fact that Tory party has an incredibly lax attitude towards extreme-right propaganda that goes right to the top of the party (consider Zac Goldsmith's bigoted BNP-style campaign to become mayor of London, or Theresa May's decision to quote an bigoted extreme-right Twitter troll in the House of Commons as a cheap dig against Jeremy Corbyn, and the countless Tory politicians who have been caught out saying bigoted things and/or sharing extreme-right content on social media).

Not only do the Tory party have a very lax attitude towards right-wing extremism, the right-wing press who run constant propaganda for the Tories also feature regular displays of bigotry and right-wing extremism.

The Sunday Times are far from alone in hosting extreme bigotry for which independent left-wing websites would (rightfully) be condemned for if they did anything like as bad.

Unlike the radio station LBC the Daily Mail saw no problem with continuing to employ the unspeakable woman, even after she publicly called for a "final solution" against Muslims.

A columnist who writes for a newspaper that supported Adolf Hitler and the rise of fascism in the 1930s calling for a modern day Holocaust against Muslims is offensive on so many levels, but the Daily Mail are as comfortable with employing the unspeakable woman today as they are with their history of promoting fascism in the 1930s.

Then there's the S*n who published an article comparing a mixed race footballer with a gorilla, and the Daily Telegraph that called for the Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to be beheaded for having the wrong political opinions.

Self-righteous MPs have launched an inquiry into the abuse of MPs, but the inquiry will tell them absolutely nothing unless they widen the scope of the investigation to look at what is inspiring people to send so many abusive messages to MPs.

Without widening the scope of the inquiry to look into the extreme behaviour of the right-wing press (the casual displays of bigotry and extremism outlined above, declaring judges "enemies of the people" for the "crime" of standing up for parliamentary democracy, the "crush the saboteurs" headline, the extreme smear-mongering campaign against Jeremy Corbyn during the election) and to investigate MPs own extreme behaviour and tolerance of extreme-right online abuse when it suits their purposes (like Theresa May quoting an extreme-right Twitter troll in parliament) then they'll never get to the bottom of why so many ordinary people feel emboldened to lob extreme abuse and threats at politicians.

If MPs and supposedly reputable newspapers create a political atmosphere where bigotry, threats, smears, abuse and extreme-right nastiness are normalised, it takes incredible feats of self-regarding hypocrisy for theat lot to react to ordinary people behaving in the very same way as if they're uniquely sick degenerates, rather than easily led people simply imitating the behaviour they see politicians and journalists continually getting away with.

The Telegraph actually called for Nicola Sturgeon to be killed for her political stance

The Daily Telegraph columnist Allison Pearson is about as brazen a hypocrite as it's possible to imagine.

In March 2012 she wrote an article entitled "The Curse of the Twitter Trolls" in which she complained, at length about Twitter trolls and the horrible abuse she had received on the platform.

Fast forward five years to March 2017 and Allison Pearson wrote another, altogether different article. In reaction to Sturgeon's move for another Scottish independence referendum the Telegraph hacks had clearly been instructed to attack Nicola Sturgeon with everything they've got, and in order to suck up to her bosses Pearson wrote an bile-spattered diatribe entitled "Nicola Sturgeon is a liar and a traitor - off with her head!".

Jo Cox was killed for having political opinions that were
unacceptable to the hard-right, now the Daily Telegraph
is calling for another female politician to be killed for
her political stance.
The title alone was enough to spark a tide of condemnation. After all it's less than a year since a female British politician was gunned down in the street for holding political opinions that the hard-right couldn't tolerate, and here were the hard-right Daily Telegraph boldly calling for another female British politician to be killed for her political opinions.

As the condemnation of their appalling headline grew the Telegraph sneakily changed the title to "Nicola Sturgeon - another treacherous queen of Scots - has miscalculated", but the URL of the article still leaves evidence of the abusive original title with the words "nicola-sturgeon-liar-traitor-head".

Even after the title change, the hateful bile that constituted the body of the article remained. The article wasn't just designed to direct hatred at Nicola Sturgeon, it was clearly intended to provoke strong anti-Scottish hatred amongst the intensely right-wing little Englanders who make up the majority of the Daily Telegraph's readership.

Allison Person knows as well as anyone that Nicola Sturgeon has suffered a disgusting barrage of online threats and abuse (the kind of misogynistic abuse that unfortunately comes with being a high profile, intelligent and politically opinionated woman), but instead of having the remotest bit of empathy stemming from her own personal experiences of online abuse, Pearson decided to stick the boot in hard by deliberately whipping up even more hatred towards Nicola Sturgeon, and Scottish people in general, and even calling for Sturgeon to be killed for her political stance.

The thing about right-wing hacks like Allison Pearson is that they have no integrity whatever. They write what they're paid to write. It doesn't matter to them if it's a weepy column about the horrors of online abuse one day, then a savagely abusive hatchet job designed to whip up a storm of misogynistic abuse and death threats against another woman the next day, they don't care that their hypocrisy is so plain to see.

They don't care that they've sold their personal integrity in order to work for disgusting hard-right billionaire sociopaths like the appalling Barclay brothers. They only care about their salary and their status. They've been bought. They're owned. And if their depraved masters tell them to whip up a tide of misogynistic and anti-Scottish abuse by calling for Nicola Sturgeon to be beheaded for "treason", then that's what they'll do, and they won't give a moment's thought to the absolute stinking hypocrisy of it.
