Nick Timothy: Blame the Irish, don't blame me

If you're not a politics nerd you may not even know who Nick Timothy is, nor how he played such an instrumental role in causing the current Brexit chaos.

He's one of those Rasputin type characters who skulks around in the political background giving terrible advice, while other more prominent figures take the blame when it all goes wrong.

He was one of Theresa May's top advisers during her time at the Home Office (where she dreamt up "Go Home" vans, the unlawfully racist Hostile Environment, brutally misogynistic spouse immigration rules and all kinds of other shockingly inept and hard-right authoritarian nonsense) and then during her time as Prime Minister too.

Nick Timothy is widely credited as the adviser who insisted that Theresa May completely eschew political consensus and then draw her ridiculous red lines to completely rule out any form of membership of the Single Market and Customs Union.

He's also advised her to call her snap "hubris" election in 2017, and advised her to continually hide herself away in Tory safe spaces, chicken out of the leadership debates, and make their disgraceful "Dementia Tax" a central feature of the campaign!

As a result of this idiocy the Tories squandered their 20+ point lead in the space of seven weeks, and pissed away their parliamentary majority, leaving them begging and bribing the bigoted DUP sectarians into propping up their absolute shambles of a government.

Oracles of ineptitude

Shortly after the 2017 general election meltdown Timothy was understandably sacked, and soon took up residence as a columnist for the dreadful Barclay brothers' Daily Telegraph propaganda rag, which he uses to settle old scores and blame everyone else for his own messes.

Essentially he's like the Tory version of Labour's John McTernan. The shadowy adviser who oversaw Labour's annihilation of their own Scottish heartlands in 2015, when they lost 40 of their 41 seats with an absolutely useless pro-austerity and rabidly British unionist campaign, both of which were widely regarded as unacceptable Tory collusion.

But somehow both of these useless characters are still given well-remunerated public platforms to spout their lamentable nonsense, as if they're infinitely wise political oracles, rather than two of the most inept political advisers in living memory.

Blame the Irish

Timothy's Telegraph column could, and probably should, be sub-headed "How everyone else is to blame except for me".

In this week's instalment he desperately seeks to blame the Irish, and specifically the Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar for the Irish border deadlock with a claim that Varadkar is "playing fast & loose with peace in Northern Ireland"!

This is an extraordinary claim from one of the masterminds behind the "red lines" that created the Irish border deadlock in the first place.

Ruling out regulatory alignment with the EU was always going to end up contradicting the Good Friday Agreement, and endangering the open border between the Republic of Ireland and the North.

That's why political commentators at the time accused Theresa May of lobbing peace in Northern Ireland onto her raging Brexit bonfire.

We could see that she'd put herself into an irresolvable bind, but she was so relentlessly stubborn that she just ploughed on belligerently until this impossible contradiction eventualy destroyed her political career.

Thick Nimothy

○ Nick Timothy was Theresa May's main adviser when she decided to run Brexit as a closed Tory shop exclusively for Tory party advantage, rather than seeking some kind of national consensus (under which we would probably have already left by now).

○ Nick Timothy advised Theresa May to put herself in an impossible bind by drawing ridiculous red lines all over her shambles of a negotiating strategy.

○ Nick Timothy advised Theresa May to call her hubris election.

○ Nick Timothy helped Theresa May throw away her parliamentary majority and render herself utterly reliant on the DUP sectarians with nonsense like "Dementia Tax" and the endless repetition of "Strong and Stable government" from within the Tory safe spaces she sealed herself within.

And now this absolute nincompoop is attempting to shift blame away from himself by cynically whipping up anti-Irish sentiments!

He's not alone

Brexit has already gone spectacularly wrong. The government missed their own self-imposed Brexit deadline in March 2019 and ended up pathetically begging the EU for an extension because we'd failed to sort our shit out in time.

And now we're heading full throttle towards a "no deal" Brexit meltdown administered by Boris Johnson and the most shockingly right-wing Tory cabinet in history.

When it all comes crashing down, the people responsible will obviously resort to the same kinds of Timothyisms:

It's not our fault ... it's the EU ... it's the Irish ... it's the civil service ... it's Merkel and the Germans ... it's the pessimistic Remainers ... it's the social liberals ... it's the EU citizens in the UK ... it's left-wing bloggers ... it's Corbyn and the Labour Party ...

It's always everyone else to blame except for the people who actually did it!

And to think that the Tories are the political party who endlessly bang on about the importance of taking "personal responsibility"!

How the Enoch Powell Corbyn smear spread from the New Statesman to the hard-right propaganda rags

If you ever needed an example of how 'centrists' and the hard-right work together in order to attack and undermine democratic socialism, look no further than the way coverage of the former Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks' scandalous comparison of the lifelong anti-racism campaigner Jeremy Corbyn with the anti-immigrant fearmongerer Enoch Powell spread from the supposedly left-leaning New Statesman to the front pages of the hard-right propaganda rags.

Anyone who already knows who Jonathan Sacks should be familiar with his history of attending controversial Zionist extremist marches organised by the pro-settler Mizrachi Olami organisation, where chants of "death to Arabs" and vandalism of Palestinian property are commonplace. 

The same Mizrachi Olami organisation supports illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied territories and organises marches through the occupied Palestinian settlement of Hebron, which is basically a much more extreme version of the sectarian Orange Order mob organising inflammatory marches through Catholic areas of Northern Ireland.

It's also worth pointing out that Sacks comparison between Jeremy Corbyn and Enoch Powell is more than a bit hypocritical given that he publicly recommended the anti-immigrant anti-Muslim Douglas Murray book "The Strange Death of Europe" as one of his best books of 2017, which contains glowing references to Enoch Powell, and chapter after chapter of xenophobic and anti-Muslim fear-mongering.

Is someone who attends extreme Zionist marches and promotes xenophobic Enoch Powell-praising books really in a position to smear a lifelong anti-racist campaigner with comparisons to Enoch Powell?

Origin of the smear

The origin of the hyperbolic comparison between Jeremy Corbyn and Enoch Powell was made in a New Statesman interview conducted by George Eaton, when Jonathan Sacks described Corbyn's "no sense of irony" comments about a specific group of rude and disruptive Zionist extremists with Enoch Powell's 1968 anti-immigrant "rivers of blood" speech.

Unsurprisingly the New Statesman ran with the smear as the headline for their article for its clickbait potential, but at no point did Eaton try to hold Sacks to account by questioning his justification for making such an extreme statement.

It's beyond doubt that Eaton know that the Corbyn "irony" comment was aimed at a small group of extreme Zionists who regularly disrupt meetings on the Israel-Palestine issue.

When Corbyn criticised them for having no sense of irony, they had been rudely berating and insulting the Palestinian ambassador.

On a previous occasion they turned up to an anti-genocide meeting to repeatedly shout "boring" at every non-Jewish genocide survivor who spoke at the event.

On another occasion the Zionist extremists turned up to disrupt a meeting that the anti-Corbyn pro-Israel Labour MP Wes Streeting was involved with, resulting in him calling them "rude yobs".

Interestingly nobody from the mainstream press attempted to misleadingly turn Streeting's criticism of the very same people as "rude yobs" into a criticism of all Zionists, or even all Jews as "rude yobs".

If these extreme Zionists are so exasperating that even an extremely pro-Israeli MP like Wes Streeting ends up calling them "rude yobs", perhaps criticising their sense of irony isn't quite as bad as "rivers of blood".

It's also worth noting that deliberately conflating Zionists with Jews is considered by many to be anti-Semitism because Zionism is a political choice, and not all Jews are Zionists (especially not the kind of extreme Zionists who habitually interrupt Israel-Palestine meetings to shout abuse at people that Corbyn and Streeting were criticising).

In their desperation to attack Corbyn by conflating a specific group of Zionist extremists with all Jews quite a few of Corbyn's fiercest critics have actually exposed themselves as being prone to anti-Semitic speech.

Anyhow, George Eaton didn't bother to point out any of this important context in the article.

Israeli apartheid

Despite failing to call Jonathan Sacks out on his hyperbolic smear, Eaton did attempt to challenge Sacks on the Israeli government's recent introduction of the Apartheid-style Nation State law. Sacks' response was absolutely dismal. Instead of criticising the racist Jewish-supremacism of the hard-right Israeli government, he made an evasive comment claiming ignorance of the significance of the law, followed by a second had assertion via his brother claiming that there was nothing Apartheid about the Nation State law, and that it was just "correcting a lacuna".

So according to Sacks, a hotly disputed and vehemently debated Jewish supremacist law that strips Arabic of its official language status in Israel is just filling a space, not because he's thought about the issue himself, but because his brother told him so - but in the very same interview he's publicly accusing someone else of being "low, dishonest and dangerous"!

Spread

After the New Statesman article was published, the context-free "Enoch Powell" comparison was churnalised onto the front pages of the hard-right Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph.

You would have thought that the editor of a left-leaning political magazine would have been horrified that his article had been used as the basis of yet another right-wing effort to damage the appeal of democratic socialism by smearing Jeremy Corbyn, but you'd be wrong.

Eaton was so giddy with delight that his article was the basis of two front page Corbyn smears in the right-wing propaganda rags that he sent out a gloating Tweet about it. 

Presumably he eventually thought better of this outrageous gloating because the Tweet is now gone, but not before I grabbed a screen shot of it (see image).

Way-hay, my anti-Corbyn smear story has gone viral in the hard-right press is certainly not a great look for the editor of a supposedly left-leaning publication, but it is indicative of the way that the supposedly left-leaning 'centrist' types are often more than happy to work with the hard-right to undermine democratic socialism.

Left-leaning publications like the New Statesman, Guardian, Mirror, and Independent are significantly better than the right-wing propaganda rags because they occasionally give voice to democratic socialists, and often hold the Tory government to account on issues where most of the mainstream media turn a blind eye. 

However, they're also home to plenty of people who are more than happy to amplify the right-wing anti-Corbyn smear campaigns by lazily churnalising smears from the right-wing propaganda rags into their own articles, and even feeding new smears back to the right-wing press and then gloating about it like Eaton did.

Conclusions

Whether you agree with Corbyn or not on his democratic socialist policies, or his efforts to combat bigotry within the Labour Party, it's impossible to deny the way his criticism of a specific group of extremely rude and disruptive Zionist extremists has been misleadingly warped into a supposed attack on all Jews, and that Jonathan Sacks went even further by using these out-of-context remarks to accuse Corbyn of being worse than the likes of Nigel Farage, the vile xenophobic Leave.EU campaign, Boris Johnson, and other bigoted race-baiters in mainstream politics

Perhaps it's unsurprising that a guy who actually recommends a far-right book that promotes xenophobia, anti-Muslim sentiments, clash of civilisations type fearmongering, and the lionisation of Enoch Powell, doesn't see the likes of Farage and Leave.EU as problematic?

It's impossible not to note the hypocrisy of a man who one day publicises an anti-Muslim diatribe of a book that glorifies Enoch Powell, then the next uses a comparison with Enoch Powell to attack someone simply because they've got a history of arguing against the Israeli occupation and the brutal repression of the Palestinian people.

It's hardly surprising that a man who supports pro-occupation pro-settler movement in Israel would use his position to attack a vocal critic of the occupation, but what is truly shocking is that the journalist who interviewed him didn't just fail to call him out on this hyperbolic smear over some deliberately out-of-context remarks, but actually gloated when his uncritical interview was used as the basis for another round of anti-Corbyn front page smears in the right-wing propaganda rags.

Jacob Rees-Mogg is cynically blaming the EU for the horrible consequences of his own actions

In January 2014 Jacob Rees-Mogg was one of many Tory and Lib-Dem politicians to actively vote in favour of Theresa May's vile UKIP-pandering anti-immigrant legislation that was subsequently used to discriminate against Windrush British citizens.

You can see Rees-Mogg's support for this legislation on the Hansard Parliamentary record.

Let's not pretend that Rees-Mogg and his Tory colleagues were not warned that these rules could be used to discriminate against British citizens without the documentation to prove their nationality, because they were warned by Diane Abbott during the parliamentary debate, and that warning was brushed off with a dose of Theresa May's ridiculously evasive question-dodging waffle.

Rees-Mogg knows perfectly well that it was the legislation that he voted in favour of that created this atmosphere of intimidation and discrimination against Windrush Brits, yet he's popped up on the front page of the Daily Telegraph to spin the extraordinary tale that the EU and pro-Europeans are to blame for the consequences of the UKIP-pandering legislation that he (and most of the other Tory Brextremists) actively voted in favour of.

Here's what he said: "We are not the sort of country that demands to see your papers, but I'm afraid pro-Europeans think we should be They buy into the EU-style relationship between individual and state. It's a shift to state being powerful and individual being weak". 

Yet Rees-Mogg knows perfectly well that he voted in favour of Theresa May's anti-immigrant legislation in order to deny deny housing, employment, social security, pensions, and NHS care to people without the documentation to prove that they are British citizens. 

He knows perfectly well that he voted in favour of Theresa May's legislation to weaken the rights of the individual and to give the state far more powers to discriminate against those without documentation to prove that they're British citizens.

Aside from the fact that Rees-Mogg has completely evaded taking responsibility for his own actions or apologising for supporting such rotten legislation, he's clearly taking the opportunistic cowards' approach of blaming others for what he did himself.

It's bad enough that Rees-Mogg has sunk to the level of blaming his political opponents for the dire consequences of his own actions. But worse than that is the way the Daily Telegraph allowed him to spew this reality-reversing gibberish on their front page, and that other pro-Brexit rags like the Express and Daily Mail rapidly churnalised this rubbish into anti-EU stories of their own.

The most viral Tory Tweet of 2018 so far is a grovelling apology for defamation!

There's no better proof of the absolute ineptitude of the Tories when it comes to social media than the Tory MP and vice-chair Ben Bradley issuing a humiliating retraction of his seriously defamatory comments about Jeremy Corbyn.

The Daily Telegraph's effort to bully these Tory MPs has backfired spectacularly

Seven years of wilfully loading the burden of austerity dogma onto the poor and ordinary whilst lavishing tax breaks and handouts on corporations and the mega-rich is proof that there is no such thing as a good Tory. However it's clear that some Tories are certainly a lot less bad than others.

There are around two dozen potential Tory rebels who are expressing opposition to the fanatically right-wing Blue-kip takeover of their party that is happening under Theresa May's leadership. They don't like the way Theresa May is being edged ever closer to the "no deal" Brexit cliff edge by the ideological fanatics in their party, and they have strong reservations about Theresa May's efforts to sideline parliament and give her ministers the power to rewrite thousands of UK laws with no parliamentary scrutiny whatever.

They're not actually trying to stop Brexit completely, but they are determined to prevent the economic catastrophe that a "no deal" flounce out of Europe would entail.

Take a listen to Ken Clarke's speech during the Brexit bill debate to get an idea of where these "rebel" Tory MPs are actually coming from.


The Daily Telegraph's effort to bully these MPs into conformity to the Blue-kip extremism that Theresa May has embraced has backfired dramatically.

By attacking these MPs in the same way that the hatemongering Daily Mail attacked the judges who ruled in favour of parliamentary sovereignty, and the academics who dare to criticise or critique the shambolic Brexit process, the Telegraph have proven beyond doubt that their descent from respected broadsheet to the depths of the contemptible sewer press (Daily Mail, S*n, Express) is now complete.

It's also backfired because their attempt to bully and shame these MPs into conformity to the Blue-kip agenda has actually created a handy list of the minority of half-decent Tory MPs who still give a damn about stuff like the national economy, parliamentary sovereignty, and holding the government to account:

Heidi Allan, Kenneth Clarke, Jonathan Djanogy, Vicky Ford, Dominic Grieve, Stephen Hammond, Oliver Heald, Jeremy Lefroy, Paul Masterton, Nicky Morgan, Bob Neill, Antoinette Sandback, Anna Soubry, Tom Tugendhat, and Sarah Wollaston.

Assuming that this effort to bully these MPs into compliance is unsuccessful, and they do rebel against the lunatic decision to hard wire the exit date so that negotiations cannot be extended even if both sides desire it, and come out fighting to defend parliamentary sovereignty too, they'll be in the minority of Tory MPs who are prepared to put the interests of the nation above the narrow party political interests of the Tory party.

There's no doubt that these people are still complicit in forcing their ruinous austerity dogma on the nation, and in the savage mistreatment of disabled people, but they deserve credit for finally taking a stand against the fanatical hard-right Blue-kip insanity that Theresa May is embracing in order to cling onto power.

Right-wing internal Labour Party wreckers are making anonymous threats again

Rupert Murdoch's Sunday Times is reporting that cowardly anonymous right-wing Labour MPs are threatening to damage the Labour Party as much as possible by resigning and triggering by-elections.

One of the most important things to note about this story is that despite the content relying on nothing more than the word of cowardly Labour right-wingers who refused to give their names, they've used an image of the Liverpool Wavertree MP Luciana Berger to illustrate their story, creating the highly misleading impression that she's one of these internal Labour Party wreckers, when she's not.

Yes Luciana got duped into tarnishing her own reputation by supporting the pre-planned and spectacularly failed Anyone But Corbyn coup last summer, but she was hardly alone in falling for their toxic scheming, and since the coup plot failed so spectacularly she's regularly reaffirmed her determination to respect party democracy and the will of the membership, and now she's angrily demanded that the Sunday Times remove her image from the article because she's got nothing to do with these threats.

Luciana Berger clearly isn't the source of these deliberate destabilisation tactics, but someone is briefing the right-wing press with this divisive nonsense, and these latest threats are very consistent with the right-wing internal wreckers' pattern. 

There is a small group of right-wing Labour MPs who are determined to do as much damage to the Labour Party as possible by constantly plotting against the party leadership, smearing ordinary members, and anonymously briefing the press with their divisive bile to stoke internal party divisions.

After anonymously briefing the Telegraph about their (aborted) plot to overthrow Jeremy Corbyn after the May 2016 local elections, they were back at the Telegraph again a few weeks later to detail their new plot to use the EU referendum (whatever the outcome) to launch their coup against Jeremy Corbyn, which they duly did.

These are the people who, during Theresa May's vanity election, attacked left-wing independent media as "propaganda and ideological purity dressed up as news and views and beamed on the internet direct to the politically deranged" and anyone who ever reads sites like Another Angry Voice, Evolve Politics or The Canary as "junkies" during an election campaign in which the virality of left-wing independent media played a huge part in Theresa May losing her majority.

Then in May 2017 they were back at the Telegraph again, this time talking about how they were looking forward to Theresa May winning a landslide victory so that they could destroy the Labour Party from within by launching a breakaway party.

After briefing the press about their (hastily aborted, and then spectacularly failed) plots to overthrow Jeremy Corbyn, about their visceral hatred for left-wing independent media and anyone who reads it (millions of Labour Party members and voters), and their fantasy of using the Tory landslide they were craving to engineer a split in the Labour Party, they're now swearing to do like Jamie Reed did in Copeland and inflict as much damage on the party as possible by resigning and triggering tricky by-elections.

It's about time someone in the Labour Party did something about these right-wing internal wreckers, and perhaps the responsibility is with the people who see themselves as genuine centrist Labour MPs like Luciana Berger?

By publicly naming and shaming the deliberate wreckers behind all of these anonymous threats, plots and the abuse and contempt towards ordinary Labour voters, they'd be doing a great service to the Labour Party. 

I'm sure pretty much everyone in the Parliamentary Labour Party knows who the main internal wreckers are, and I'm pretty sure that there are quite a few significantly less fanatically hard-right Labour MPs who now know these constant divisive threats are going way too far, and who have plenty of evidence to expose the wreckers' identities.

Like all major political parties Labour will always have divergences of opinion and plenty of internal debate, but there's a huge difference between healthy political debate, and running off to bitterly brief the right-wing propaganda rags about your latest incredibly divisive threats to damage the Labour Party as much as possible when your faction continues not getting its own way.

The fact that these wreckers are too cowardly to put their names to all the threats and bile they anonymously spew to their chums in the right-wing media just goes to show what kind of obnoxious people they really are.

This constant stream of threats and abuse also goes to show how much work all the genuine Labour people have in front of them to reduce the toxifying influence of these right-wing wreckers who clearly value their hard-right neoliberal economic ideology way above the party they're pretending to serve as they regularly insult and smear its members and constantly plot to damage it as much as possible.

The chief editor of Breitbart London is spreading fake news about the Grenfell tower fire

If you ever wanted a concrete demonstration of the savage right-wing bias of the mainstream media consider the fact that the chief editor of Breitbart London has posted a brazen "fake news" Tweet about the Grenfell tower fire that's now been shared over 5,000 times, but instead of holding him to account, hacks at the Daily Telegraph somehow decided to falsely accuse named left-wing websites of spreading "fake news" on their front page instead.

The Breitbart editor Raheem Kassam has had it pointed out to him by hundreds of people that his Tweet begins with an outright lie and is nothing more than a pathetically tasteless bit of right-wing victim complex crying, but he's not taken it down nor apologised for outright lying to the public.

• The claim that Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council is Labour controlled is an outright lie that is fantastically easy to disprove. 

• The fact that the new Labour MP for Kensington Emma Dent Coad once had a powerless position on the Tory dominated Kensington and Chelsea council betrays a very weak understanding of how local government actually works.

• Ignoring the fact that Sadiq Khan was not even mayor of London when the decision to cover Grenfell tower in highly flammable plastic is obviously absurd, as is the ridiculous implication that the mayor of the biggest city in western Europe should micromanage every building renovation project in the city.

• Trying to pin responsibility on Labour because the original construction date for the tower coincided with a Labour government is absolutely pathetic grasping. The problem isn't that there are 4,000 odd tower blocks in the UK, it's that many of them are deadly firetraps thanks to seven years of abject Tory neglect of housing policy, and their refusal to listen to expert advice that flammable cladding should be banned.

• Describing a list that begins with an outright lie as "Grenfell tower facts" is absolutely outrageous stuff that even Kellyanne Conway of "alternative facts" fame would blush at.

• Making up lies and deliberately distorting and misrepresenting the facts in order to recast the Tory party as the true victims of the Grenfell tower fire is a disgusting new low, even for the editor of a despicable website like Breitbart.

Unsurprisingly there is no outrage in the mainstream media over this deliberate lying and sick emotional manipulation from the head of a right-wing news outlet.

Meta-fake news

Meanwhile hacks at the Daily Telegraph (a right-wing propaganda sheet operated by the tax-dodging billionaire Barclay brothers) lazily churnalised a post from the hard-right Guido Fawkes blog into a front page accusation that named left-wing websites are spreading "fake news".

The problem of course is that one of the websites they accuse of spreading "fake news" (Evolve Politics) never even mentioned the story in question, and another website (Novara Media) did mention it, but quickly put up a video post describing the story as "wildly unlikely".

The best way I can think of to describe this fake Guido/Telegraph claim that others are guilty of spreading "fake news" is Meta-fake news. 

The Telegraph's reputation is completely shot

It may seem implausible to imagine it now, but once upon a time the Daily Telegraph was a reasonably reputable highbrow publication. 

Yes they were always extremely right-wing, but they would never have lazily churnalised outright lies from a hard-right blog onto their front page.

Then there was the Telegraph journalist who called for a female politician to be executed for her political beliefs within a year of Jo Cox being murdered in the street for her political views by an extreme-right fanatic!

Then there was the fact that one of their most respected columnists (Peter Oborne) quit in disgust at the way they were letting major advertisers (like the Mexican drug cartel money launderers HSBC) influence their editorial policy.

The Telegraph used to be a reasonably respectable highbrow broadsheet, but standards have slipped so far now that they deserve the same level of outright derision as despicable gutter press outlets like The S*n, Daily Mail and Express.

Where to turn now

Lots of us like to get our news from a variety of news sources in order to get a more balanced view of what's going on, but the Telegraph have now clearly repositioned themselves as exactly the same kind of savagely dishonest hard-right attack rag as their tabloid bedfellows in the gutter press.

They're not only guilty of ignoring a highly influential right-wing news editor spreading outright Twitter lies about Grenfell tower, they also lazily churnalised an extreme-right blog post into front page news without even vaguely checking their facts first.

These hypocritical and outrageously lazy Daily Telegraph hacks have proven beyond doubt that they consider right-wing purveyors of fake news like Breitbart to be beyond reproach, and that they mindlessly accept "fake news" stories they've read on hard-right blogs like Guido Fawkes as so unquestionable they blast them onto their front page without even the most rudimentary of fact-checking.

Anyone who wants to occasionally check out a respectable and generally fact-based right-wing interpretation of the news should clearly abandon the Telegraph as a reliable source and look at the Financial Times, the Economist (the in-house magazine for neoliberals) or even Rupert Murdoch's Times (!!!) instead.
