Theresa May is lying again

Every single week it's the same story at Prime Ministers' Questions. No matter what questions Jeremy Corbyn, Ian Blackford, and other opposition MPs ask Theresa May, all they ever get in return is a barrage of badly-scripted evasions, smears, misdirections, and outright lies.

On April 10th 2019 Theresa May told a particularly egregious PMQs lie when she claimed that her Tory government "have been protecting police funding".

This isn't just deception, it's an outright lie. The Office For National Statistics found that since 2010 central government funding for the police has been reduced by 30%, resulting in an overall 19% decline as local police forces have sought to plug the worst of the gaps with increased Council Tax funds (one of the many reasons Council Tax bills keep going up under this ruinous Tory government).

Here are some of the consequences of this unprecedented Tory assault on police funding.
  • 20,000+ police jobs scrapped since 2010 [source]
  • 40% of Police Community Support Officer jobs scrapped since 2010 [source]
  • An 18% reduction in overall police workforce since 2010 [source]
  • More than 600 police stations shut down, and entire towns left without police stations [source]
  • UK per capita police numbers at the lowest since the 1970s [source]
  • Soaring violent crime rates, especially knife crime, murder/manslaughter, mugging, and sexual offences [source]
  • Tory police cuts severely hampering counter-terrorism efforts. [source]
  • 91% of crimes resulting in nobody being charged [source]
One of the most extraordinary things about Theresa May's lie that the Tories have been protecting police funding is that as Home Secretary she had no qualms about openly bragging about her cuts agenda, and even accused police and crime experts of "scare-mongering" and "crying wolf" when they warned that her cuts agenda would eventually lead to rising crime.

But now that the devastating consequences of this unprecedented ideologically-driven Tory assault on police funding are feeding through (soaring violent crime, rampant gang culture, huge numbers of uninvestigated crimes, entire towns and cities turned into no-police zones, the increased risk of terrorism ...) Theresa May has had to change her tune.

She's no longer bitterly attacking police and crime experts for warning that her police cuts agenda would result in negative consequences becuase those negative consequences are completely undeniable, she's outright denying that her police cuts agenda even took place!

The worst thing about this is that huge numbers of Tory tribalists will continue to mindlessly believe the absolute fantasy that they're supporting 'the party of law and order' despite the vast mountain of evidence of the Tories' ideological assault on policing over the last nine years, and the fact that Theresa May has blatantly switched from denying that her cuts agenda would have negative outcomes, to barefaced Orwellian lying that her unprecedented police cuts agenda just didn't take place at all!

Theresa May just laughed in the face of the millions of workers her party has spent the last 8 years impoverishing

If you want to get to grips with the shocking levels of mainstream media bias in the UK just consider the reaction to Prime Minister's Questions on December 5th 2018.

Instead of criticising Theresa May for the absolutely shambolic state of her government, or the cynical and evasive scripted non-answers she responded with, or the usual cacophony of braying, jeering, and howling from the 300-odd millionaire elitists on the Tory benches, or the way she openly and contemptuously laughed in the face of the millions of workers her party has spent the last 8 years impoverishing, the BBC politics team and swathes of the mainstream media tried to create the absurd narrative that Theresa May somehow won the debate because Jeremy Corbyn asked the wrong questions!

The crux of their ridiculous narrative was that Jeremy Corbyn used his six questions to absolutely nail the Tory track record on poverty, collapsing wages, Universal Credit, and their grotesque publicity stunt the previous weekend of taking publicity photos in food banks (as if they're actually proud of their record of massively increasing poverty to the extent that huge numbers of people now rely on charitable food handouts to survive).

According the the bitter mainstream media hacks, Corbyn should have concentrated on Brexit minutae and the historic three defeats in a single day Theresa May's government had just suffered.

The absurdity of this warped anti-Corbyn narrative was beyond obvious.

It was always going to be the case that other MPs from all sides of the house (including Theresa May's own Tory backbenchers) would bring up Brexit, Theresa May's shambolic last-minute fudge of a deal, and the government's parliamentary defeats. Here's the SNP's Ian Blackford doing just that.

Another element of the ridiculousness is that the three parliamentary defeats Theresa May suffered came as a direct consequence of Jeremy Corbyn and his Labour Party colleagues voting against the government.

These defeats didn't just materialise out of nowhere like the mainstream media hacks want to present it, the happened because Jeremy Corbyn worked with other opposition MPs and a small bunch of Tory rebels to inflict them.

Yet another element of the ridiculousness is that there are 5 days of parliamentary debate scheduled on Theresa May's Brexit shambles before the crunch vote on December 11th. PMQs was one of the very few political opportunities to talk about any other issue for the entire week, and the hacks all supposedly wanted Corbyn to waste it away on even more Brexit bickering!

By choosing not to gloat about Monday's parliamentary defeats and focus on poverty and collapsing living standards Corbyn opened a second front of attack, and a really important one too.

If Theresa May's Brexit deal is going to be stopped, triggering either a General Election or another EU referendum, it's now absolutely vital to make the crucial point that stagnant wages, soaring poverty, collapsing public services, crumbing infrastructure have nothing to do with immigration and the EU and everything to do with 8 ruinous years of Tory austerity dogma, wage repression, and under-investment.

Then there's the fact that Corbyn's questions on poverty created an extraordinary clip that was so wildly inappropriate that it should have been widely broadcast and seen/heard by almost everyone. When Corbyn challenged Theresa May on Britain's "lost decade" of wage growth, she openly laughed about the collapsing living standards her party have inflicted.
  • A damning United Nations report has slammed the Tories for replacing traditional British concern and compassion for vulnerable and suffering people with a "punitive, mean-spirited and callous approach".
And when Jeremy Corbyn challenged Theresa May on this absolutely outrageous track record, she actually sat there and laughed.

Instead of furiously attacking Jeremy Corbyn for asking vital questions about the poverty that is ruining the lives of millions, maybe mainstream media hacks could just have asked one single question about whether it was appropriate for Theresa May to sit there and laugh at the appalling wave of poverty the Tories have created?

But no. Holding Theresa May to account simply isn't part of their remit.

Even when her government is in chaos and she's openly laughing at the millions of people her party have deliberately impoverished, mainstream media hacks deliberately switch targets and aim their fury at Jeremy Corbyn for clinically highlighting a Tory track record of failure that extends way beyond recklessly gambling away the nation's future to nick a few thousand UKIP votes, then wasting two years cobbling together an absolute shambles of a Brexit plan.

For them it was an unforgivable mistake for Corbyn to have cornered Theresa May on poverty, and to even create the shocking situation where she openly and publicly laughed at the millions of workers her party have impoverished (a clip they would have shared with the nation if they had any intention of actually doing their jobs rather than cobbling together ludicrously tendentious anti-Corbyn outrage pieces).

What they apparently wanted to hear sequence of questions about the convoluted intricacies of Brexit with very limited appeal to people who live outside the Westminster bubble.

Think about it. If you're one of the millions who are struggling to put food on the table or heat your home, and can't even imagine how you're going to give your kids any kind of enjoyable Christmas, the last thing you want to hear is politicians quibbling about backstops, Brexit legal advice, a thing called a "Grieve amendment", etc.

The reason mainstream media hacks are presenting this as a terrible blunder from Corbyn is that he didn't say exactly what they wanted to hear. They're all living the high life on six figure salaries so why on earth would they ever give a shit about the tsunami of poverty and suffering the Tories have unleashed on millions of ordinary people, let alone when their blinkered Brexit obsession is reaching its absolute peak?

In fact they don't give a shit to such an extent that they still remain oblivious to the fact that it was this Tory policy of deliberately inflicting poverty and suffering on millions that generated the wave of public anger that actually lifted the Brexit vote just marginally above the 50% threshold.

This week they don't want to hear anything at all about anything that actually impacts the lives of millions, they want limited-appeal context-free Brexit bickering and nothing else, and they're going to scweam and scweam unless they get what they want.

Theresa May is openly taking Tory voters for gullible idiots again

Theresa May has had an awful time defending her party's relationship with British businesses since her Foreign Secretary decided to say "fuck business" in response to the concerns that a shambolic Tory "no deal" flounce out of the EU would leave them with no choice to quit the UK and relocate to the continent.

Jeremy Corbyn raised these concerns at Prime Minister's questions, emphasising the risk Theresa May's chaotic Brexit floundering represents to hundreds of thousands of skilled British workers.

The Tory benches laughed and jeered when Corbyn read out a letter from a worker in the car industry with concerns that his job could disappear if Theresa May allows Jacob Rees-Mogg and the ERG extremists to deliver the ruinous "no deal" catastrophe they're craving (so that they can make a killing buying up distressed British assets on the cheap).

The sound of dozens of privileged Tory MPs laughing and jeering at the concerns of a British worker who is worried about the future of his job is a perfect encapsulation of the absolute contempt that these people have towards ordinary working people.

But things got even worse when Theresa May resorted to the scripted drivel she always spews instead of ever bothering to answer the questions she's asked.

"If he wants to stand up and talking in favourable terms about business he's got a decision to make; he can either back business or he can want to overthrow capitalism. He can't do both" she skwawked.

Presumably the privileged Tory wonk who wrote this riposte thought it was incredibly clever and witty, but the problem of course is that it's yet more contemptuous Tory idiot fodder.

Just consider the 2017 Labour Manifesto, and its commitment to reverse the Tory race to the bottom in order to restore Corporation Tax rates to nearer the G7 average.

What's the point in Corbyn doing this if he actually wants to 'overthrow capitalism' as the Tories accuse him of?

More specifically, what's the point of fairly taxing corporations if they don't exist?

Of course this kind of vapid scaremongering rhetoric plays well with the Tory base, because they're either too hopelessly misinformed to grasp that Corbyn is actually a middle of the road democratic socialist, not an extreme-left bogeyman intent on the destruction of capitalism, or they're well aware that it's utter bullshit but have so little faith in the rest of British society that they're happy to hear scaremongering propaganda gibberish from the Prime Minister because they imagine the rest of us are gullible enough to believe in it.

You'd have to be utterly delusional to imagine that a man who wants to slightly raise Corporation Tax rates (to a level lower than they were under Margaret Thatcher) is some kind of militant intent on completely overthrowing capitalism.

But then you'd have to be severely cognitively challenged in order to see a Prime Minister who allows her Foreign Secretary to go completely unpunished for saying "fuck business" in response to their legitimate concerns as some kind of champion of capitalism.

All in all you'd have to be hopelessly gullible to see the Brextremist-controlled Tories as a business-friendly party, but then by spewing such witless and sub-juvenile political caricatures of her opponent, Theresa May is clearly demonstrating that that's exactly how she sees most Tory voters: Hopelessly gullible dupes who will mindlessly believe whatever ludicrous crap she spouts.

The ugly truth behind Theresa May's "mansplaining" jibe

Tories are absolutely loving Theresa May's facile misuse of the term "mansplaining" at PMQs to have a dig at Jeremy Corbyn for pointing out that it's International Women's Day the next day.

I recognise that I'm in danger of being accused of "mansplaining" myself for the next bit, but the term "mansplaining" is not just shorthand for a man explaining something to a woman, it refers specifically to the kind of situation where some absolutely condescending dick of a man patronisingly tells a female astronaut with a degree in astrophysics to 'learn some actual SCIENCE', or tells a female Olympic cyclist how to ride a bike,  or tells a woman with a PhD in Women's Medieval Writing that women didn't write in the middle ages.

Don't take my word for it that the term is being misused far too broadly to attack any man who explains anything, take the word of the woman who is actually credited with inventing the term.

The fact that Theresa May has misunderstood and misused the term isn't even the worst of it by far.

There's the fact that this week Theresa May is welcoming the vile and misogynistic Saudi Arabian tyrants with open arms, with the aim of selling them even more British weapons to commit war crimes in Yemen.

Ha ha ha these myopic right-wingers chortle at Theresa May's glib identity politics point-scoring retort, whilst completely ignoring the growing mountain of mutilated bodies of Yemeni women and children who have been blasted to pieces by Theresa May's tyrannical and profoundly misogynistic Saudi mates.

Then there's the horrifyingly sexist impact of Tory hard-right austerity dogma to consider. Thanks to Theresa May and her Tory mates 86% of the economic burden of Tory austerity dogma has been loaded onto the shoulders of poor and ordinary women.

Mainly male financial sector workers trashed the UK economy in 2008 with their reckless gambling on absolute junk investments, yet Theresa May and the Tory party saw fit to load the vast majority of the economic burden of this crisis onto the shoulders of poor and ordinary women via hard-right austerity dogma, whilst actually lavishing massive tax breaks and favours onto the mainly male bankers and corporate fat cats who created the crisis in the first place!

But sadly this sycophantic laughter from the press gallery and the right-wing Twitterati at Theresa May's painfully glib "mansplaining" retort is indicative of the lamentable decline in the standard of political discourse in the UK.

Who cares that Theresa May is the head of a political party with profoundly misogynistic economic policies who is welcoming an even more misogynistic bunch of Islamist tyrants to London to grovel for more of their oil cash? She did a funny, ha ha fucking ha.

Listen up Theresa, you don't actually need a dick to be a misogynist

Theresa May has resorted to a crude display of dick-counting in order to score cheap political points against Labour. She was trying to make the absurd case that because she's a woman and Jeremy Corbyn is a man, the Tories are somehow more female-friendly than Labour.

The glaring problem for Theresa May and her Tory colleagues is that they have repeatedly voted in favour of imposing ruinous austerity dogma on the British economy. Not only does Tory austerity dogma (or deliberate under-investment as it could also be described) provably cause vast amounts of social and economic damage in general, but 86% of the burden of it has been loaded onto the shoulders of women from poor and ordinary women.

The reality is that Theresa May and her Tory mates are the misogynists who believe in economically punishing millions of women from poor and ordinary backgrounds for the reckless gambling of the wealthy (and mainly male) bankers who trashed the global economy and caused the soaring UK budget deficit in the first place.

On the other hand Labour and Jeremy Corbyn want to scrap the Tories' ruinous and discriminatory austerity agenda, and implement numerous policies that would benefit women across the UK too. For example the Labour policy of a £10 minimum wage would benefit millions of women, because the vast majority of workers earning poverty pay are female.

So while Theresa May and her elitist Tory chums focus on cock-counting to score cheap political points as they simultaneously discriminate against women from the 'lower orders', Jeremy Corbyn has come up with policies to actually help ordinary women who aren't lucky enough to earn £142,500 a year like Theresa May does. The kind of women who aren't wealthy enough to totally insulate themselves from the devastating consequences of Tory austerity fanaticism that are suffered every day by women outside the wealthy establishment class.

The simple truth of the matter is that you don't actually have to have a dick to be an outrageous misogynist, and possession of a penis doesn't disbar you from fighting for women's rights either.

How did Damian Green's audition for Theresa May's job go?

The Tory First Secretary of State Damian Green stood in for Theresa May at Prime Minister's Questions and put on a very accomplished display of evasion to put Theresa May's charmlessness and inathenticity into perspective.

The press continually describe Green as a loyal Theresa May ally but today's performance popped that particular balloon. The relative competence with which he evaded answering all of the questions, and the confidence with which he wove several ludicrous narratives about how swimmingly everything is going made his performance look a hell of a lot more like a job interview to succeed his hapless boss than a man loyally holding the fort in her absence.

Green is an accomplished liar who has a long track record of lying through his teeth in order to sell the toxic Tory snake oil that is austerity dogma, so it's no real surprise that he put on a competent display of evasion and misrepresentation as he provided a series of tangential and downright misleading non-answers to Emily Thornberry's six questions about the very real threat of a ruinous Tory "no deal" strop away from the Brexit negotiating table.

When he was asked what would happen to the Irish border if Theresa May decides to strop away from the negotiations with nothing, Green responded by claiming that that's not what the outcome the Tories want, as if claiming to not want something to happen is the same as explaining what the consequences would be if it did happen.

Thornberry pressed him again about what a "no deal" strop would mean, and again he evaded answering the question with a load of partisan political bluster as if it's perfectly fine for the Prime Minister to threaten to do something, then not explain what the consequences would be for jobs, the economy, international trade, peace in Northern Ireland, or anything else if she actually does it.

Green's blustering political attack on Labour provided Thornberry with the opportunity to land a glorious counter-punch; accusing him of not getting the Prime Minister's memo because "you're supposed to be building consensus man!".

It was a cracking riposte against the lame duck Tory Prime Minister, and it's absolutely telling that her supposedly loyal ally Damian Green could only sit there and chortle away with the rest of the house at ludicrousness of his absolute laughing stock of a boss.

Thornberry persisted with another question on the "no deal" threat, and instead of answering the question Green resorted to bragging about how the Tories have juked the unemployment statistics through an unprecedented campaign of wage repression, a barbaric sanctions regime that costs more to administer than it saves in reduced benefits, a bonfire of workers' rights, and an absolute explosion in low-pay, low-skill exploitative Zero Hours Contract, fake self-employment, part-time and gig economy jobs since 2010.

Thornberry tried to address the "no deal" threat yet again by bringing up the dreadful Tory inconsistency over whether there is actually a government contingency plan for a "no deal" nuclear Brexit strop, or whether Boris Johnson was right to claim that there is no such "no deal" plan the day before.

Again Green evaded the question in the kind of glib and effortless manner that David Cameron used to manage so easily, but which Theresa May struggles so badly with.

This time Green evaded the question by once again falling back on the juked unemployment figures that only total dipsticks could believe have come about through good economic management, rather than continual Tory attacks on wages, labour rights and working conditions.

Thornberry muddled her words in her final question, but had the good grace to laugh at herself in exactly the way that Theresa May would be incapable of if she'd messed up, and Green responded to the question with a truly fantastical fairy story about how the Brexit negotiations are going swimmingly, and how it's bumbling David Davis who is firmly setting the agenda, rather than the EU27.

We all know that the EU27 forced Davis to collapse his own negotiating stance in the first bloody meeting, and that the belated Tory offer on citizens rights was derided as an absolute insult by all other parties, but Green was enjoying his fantasy, and his moment in the spotlight so much that it didn't seem to matter.

My political sympathies are obviously with Emily Thornberry, but I thought Damian Green did well too under the circumstances (excusing the chaotic mess the country is in after seven years of ruinous Tory mismanagement is hardly an easy job).

Thornberry is quick-witted, engaging, actually funny at times (a rare trait indeed in Westminster), and definitely the kind of person you'd want on your side of a debate rather than arguing against you. She was one of the absolute stars of Theresa May's vanity election, and while the Blairites continue to skulk around in the shadows of the back benches, she's one of the Labour politicians continually building a bigger and better public profile by staying fiercely loyal to the wishes of the party membership.

Not only did Green do his job effectively by doggedly evading every single question without resorting to displays of sneering, grimacing, and uncontrollable fury responses like his lame duck of a boss, he also came across as actually having a bit of a sense of humour, which is not something that can be said of Theresa May (humourless glowering is more her forte), David Cameron (slick, but far too slow-witted to be genuinely funny), Michael Howard (his combination of creepiness and ineptitude was funny, but not deliberately so) or Iain Duncan Smith (about quick-witted as a fence post and about as funny as a terminal cancer diagnosis).

Green must have dramatically improved his odds of succeeding his hapless boss on the strength of this job audition, but given the absolute mess that Cameron and May have created between them, and the near-inevitability of another election before the summer of 2019, it looks like he'd have to make good use of that sense of humour from the opposition benches.

Theresa May has been given yet another free pass by the mainstream media

Aside from spewing the exact same demeaning economic baby-talk as always ("bankrupt Britain", "living within our means", "we'll end up like Greece") during Prime Minister's Questions, Theresa May also issued an extraordinary threat against Jeremy Corbyn.

After completely evading a question about the shocking levels of student debt after the Tory tuition fees hike by reeling off a load of ludicrous hyperbole about how terrible a Labour government would supposedly be, Theresa May concluded by saying "we will never let it happen".

This statement raises a number of extremely important questions, including who is "we", and by what means would they ensure Jeremy Corbyn "never" becomes Prime Minister?

Presumably Theresa May isn't just referring to the Tory party when she says "we will never let it happen".

She must be referring to the entire establishment class (the Westminster establishment club, the mainstream media, the leaders of the armed forces and secret services ...) because it's difficult to see what the Tory party alone could actually do to stop Labour becoming the government if they win enough support in a democratic election.

The idea of a Jeremy Corbyn as Prime Minister may have seemed a ludicrous proposition in the past, but Theresa May's vanity election resulted in the fastest public opinion turnaround in British electoral history, with Corbyn now looking like a statesmanlike Prime Minister in waiting, and Theresa May looking like a bedraggled placeholder PM who is just waiting for members of her own party to begin plunging the knives into her back.

A recent YouGov poll put Labour on 46%, which gives them an 8% lead over the Tories. That would be enough for Jeremy Corbyn to form a majority government. So assuming Labour do win the next General Election (whenever it happens), by what means do Theresa May and her allies intend to prevent Labour forming the government?

Back in 2015 a serving UK army general claimed that the UK military could stage a coup d'etat to overthrow the government if Jeremy Corbyn is ever elected Prime Minister. The Tory government saw no problem with this shocking threat against democracy, and no inquiry was conducted to discover who the serving general was so that they could be disciplined for their outrageous comments.

This Tory attitude that it's fine for serving members of the armed forces to talk of staging military takeovers, or hard-right tabloid newspapers to attack judges as "enemies of the people" shows a very concerning Tory contempt for democracy and the rule of law.

In light of the sinister threat of a coup d-etat, and the brazen right-wing contempt for the rule of law that is so fashionable these days, is it possible that Theresa May is hinting that her allies would attack democracy and defy the law of the land in order to prevent the formation of an elected Corbyn government?

She said that they will "never let it happen".

If that doesn't mean that Theresa May and her unnamed allies will stop at nothing to prevent the democratic will of the people, then what does it mean?

Any responsible mainstream media organisation would have picked up on this threat and forced Theresa May to clarify what she meant by it, but as usual she gets a free pass, and it's up to independent media sites to consider the implications of what she's actually threatening.

Just imagine if it was Jeremy Corbyn as a struggling and unpopular Prime Minister threatening that he would never allow his increasingly popular political opponents back into power under any circumstances. How would the right-wing press react to such a threat? How would the supposedly neutral BBC react to such a threat?

We know the answer don't we? They'd be absolutely bloody hysterical about it.

So the question has to be why are the mainstream media so intent on letting Theresa May get away with making such sinister rhetoric when they know that she's exactly the kind of hard-right authoritarian who would obviously stop at nothing to maintain her grip on political power?

If she's willing to casually lob peace in Northern Ireland onto her bonfire of vanity, then is it really too much to expect the mainstream media to at least hold her to account and get her to clarify by what means she intends to permanently lock the main opposition party out of power?

Theresa May is still churning out scripted idiot fodder

Theresa May has been talking the same old scripted idiot fodder again at Prime Minister's Questions: "Bankrupt Britain", "living within our means", We'll end up like Greece ... the only surprise was that there was no mention of "magic money trees" this time around.

It's like her Tory script writers have learned absolutely nothing from the election result.

They're offering more of the same because they're unwilling to adapt to the new reality that people are sick and tired of listening to endlessly repeated economically-illiterate platitudes that only tabloid rote learners would be gullible enough to believe in, and cognitive-dissonance inducing rhetoric about how the Tories are doing such a wonderfully great job of managing the economy, but that the economy is simultaneously so completely knackered that we can't afford properly funded public services or decent wage rises for our brave emergency service workers!

A significant swathe of the public accepted a constant bombardment of glib, reality-reversing, mutually contradictory economic idiot fodder from David Cameron because he had the slickness and spivvy confidence to pull off such dishonest Orwellian nonsense, but Theresa May simply hasn't got the assertiveness or the presentation skills to lie, and evade, and mislead every week like Cameron used to.

I used to think of erudite former Tory Prime Ministers like Churchill and Disraeli turning in their graves at Cameron's dishonest and inane gibberish, but upon reflection Cameron was positively eloquent and engaging in comparison to Theresa May's stilted and patronising readings of the same pre-written platitudes Cameron used to rely on.

If she can't even convincingly read out answers that have been pre-written for her, how on earth is she going to do anything but a catastrophic job of overseeing the Brexit negotiations?

The only reason the Tories are sticking with this dead duck Prime Minister is that they know that sacking her would lead to an irresistible public demand for another general election, which they'd almost certainly lose really heavily.

So every time you hear Theresa May labouring away to recite her scripted idiot fodder platitudes from now until the day her fellow Tories knife her in the back, just remember that this infuriatingly inept charlatan only there at all reading the script because the Tory party are intent on putting their own narrow party political interest (clinging onto power for power's sake) above the interests of the nation as a whole (giving us a second chance to elect a stable government).
