The gammons are incredibly easy to please aren't they?

Tory tax-dodger Michael Ashcroft has gone viral on Twitter posting a quite frankly deranged diatribe combining World War Two nostalgia and hard-right tabloid talking points.

The gammons absolutely lapped it up because WWII fetishism, spewing hate at minorities, and blasting anyone who dares criticise their beloved Tory lords and masters combines three of their absolute favourite things.

In this article I'm going to run through the whole thing, highlighting what a load of historically illiterate and quite frankly bigoted cobblers it is.

Firstly it's always important to establish what the source is. In this case it's the Tory tax-dodger Michael Ashcroft who is safely hiding away from the coronavirus crisis in the tax haven of Belize.

This is a guy who conned his way into the unelected House of Lords with commitments that he would end his non-dom tax status and begin actually paying his fair share of taxes in the UK, which he clearly never did.

Just look at his smug Tory face and ask yourself why the gammons love a Britain-hating tax-dodger like this so much.

Perhaps it's because somewhere deep beneath their faux patriotism, they also hate Britain too?

And why is it that the people who fetishise WWII the most egregiously always seem to be the baby boomers who weren't even alive when it happened?
The "Your Country Needs You" slogan was the most famous poster campaign from the First World War, so top marks to Ashcroft for getting his wars jumbled up whilst pretending to be a lover of British history and a patriot.

Probably the most famous Second World War slogan was "Careless talk Costs Lives", which was nice and clear. But imagine if the government had decided to replace this clear and intelligible statement with garbled gibberish like "Stay Alert By Washing Your Hands", which sounds more like the kind of thing a stroke victim would say before collapsing, than a government information campaign.

There would definitely have been complaints.

The thing with this coronavirus/Blitz analogy is that it completely falls to bits when you look at the contrasting government responses.

Back in 1940 the government threw everything it had at defending Britain from the Blitz during the Battle of Britain.

At the beginning of the coronavirus crisis Boris Johnson deluded himself into believing the world would celebrate him as the "Superman of Capitalism" for deliberately allowing the virus to spread, and then he told a confused looking Phillip Scholfield about how he was being advised to let the virus "move through the population".

It's easy to imagine that the British people would have asked questions like "why aren't you doing enough to prevent these air raids?" if the government policy of the day had been to allow the Nazi bombers to move freely through our skies!

In reality the air raid sirens didn't actually apply to everyone.

It was the job of people like Air Raid Wardens, anti-aircraft gunners, police, the fire service, the ambulance service ... to stay above ground and deal with the consequences, while the general public were expected to make their way to air raid shelters.

A similar situation exists now, with NHS and care home workers, the emergency services, retail staff, delivery drivers, bus drivers, utilities engineers and many others expected to work through the crisis.

You'd have to be dangerously mindless and politically illiterate not to have questioned who is affected by the lockdown measures and who isn't, or come to your own conclusions about who the essential workers in our economy really are.
A transparent dig at transgender people to rile up the gammon.

Why is it that the hysterical anti-trans droolers are so utterly obsessed with toilet facilities, to the extent of demanding that trans-women expose themselves to danger by using the male facilities?

And a comparison with the social norms of the 1930s and '40s shows us that all LGBTQ+ people were
subjected to horrific systematic discrimination, imprisoned, sent to mental institutions, and even tortured with barbarism like chemical castration.

Are we really going to accept this maudlin nostalgia for the good old days when queer folk were routinely persecuted by the state?
And now a dig at vegans.

This WWII/Coronavirus analogy has just descended into simple-minded minority bashing hasn't it?

But if we try to actually consider the analogy, the reality is that even eight decades ago, and fighting a desperate war for survival, the British government managed to provide the public with portable gas masks.

The current Tory government failed so badly at providing sufficient ventilators that they ended up sending Covid-19 infected patients back to die in care homes so that their deaths wouldn't be recorded in the daily death stats.

Another dig at vegans!

First: Vegan milk is a good thing. If you haven't tried almond milk before, give it a go. I'm not vegan, but I actually prefer it to ordinary milk these days.

Second: If the UK government could have got away with replacing the milk in some people's rations with manufactured ersatz milk, they would have been absolutely delighted. If some 10% of the population wanted milk alternatives instead of milk, that would have meant less demand on farmers, and more dairy produce to share between the rest. A win-win for everyone, and a boost for the war effort too.

But let's all hate vegans eh?
 Bloody hell!

He's finished with the LGBTQ+ community and the vegans, so now he's going after 'the blacks'!
He's clearly having a dig at skin tone plasters here, as if they're some kind of assault on decency and common sense.

A white person's reaction to skin-tone plasters tells you all you need to know about their attitudes.

Some will say "oh, that's cool", and easily grasp the fact that it's a good thing that non-white parents will now have the option of using plasters that don't imply that their kids' skin is the wrong colour, and wonder why this simple innovation didn't happen a lot sooner.

Others will adopt a culture war attitude and treat the concept of choice in plaster colours as if it's some kind of barbaric assault on Western Christian culture, even though they'll endlessly point to extravagant (to the point of being confusing) levels of choice elsewhere in the economy as evidence that their beloved capitalism is a good thing!
The fact is that the UK government spent the pre-war years rapidly building up stockpiles of weapons and ammunition because they saw the threat of Nazi expansionism coming.

In contrast the Tory government were repeatedly warned that stockpiles of medical equipment and protective gear were shockingly inadequate in the case of a viral respiratory disease, but they ignored the warnings, because ensuring adequate supplies for an emergency contrasted with their crackpot "let's cut our way to prosperity" austerity agenda.

Yet another astoundingly weak analogy that actually ends up making his beloved Tories look worse, if you know anything about the subject at all, which he apparently doesn't.

The gammons absolutely love this kind of ignorant, history-rewriting, minority-bashing, pro-government drivel don't they?

Conclusion

Digging beneath the inaccuracies, the brazenly inaccurate historical revisionism, and the multiple examples of minority-bashing, the core messages here are don't dare to be different, and don't criticise your government, no matter how badly they screw up.

But this also falls down spectacularly when we remember that widespread public dissatisfaction led to the departure of Britain's first war leader Neville Chamberlain, and his replacement with Winston Churchill.

If Britain was the kind of intolerant, fanatically right-wing, history-rewriting, dissent-crushing, minority-persecuting, leader-worshipping, autocracy that Ashcroft and the gammons so desperately want it to be today, Churchill would never have become Prime Minister, we would probably have lost the Second World War (or negotiated peace with the Nazis), and we'd have been just about as bad as the Nazis were anyway.

Aside from the fact it's almost always baby boomers doing the most egregious WWII fetishism, it also often tends to be people who have far more in common with the ideology of the Nazis than with the Allies doesn't it?

Yet another Tory Brextremist is cashing in by betting against Britain on the sly

The Tory Brextremist Steve Baker has been caught investing over £70,000 in a company advising its clients to invest in gold in order to avoid the financial hit of a Tory "no deal" Brexit.

This isn't just any old Tory either. Baker was until recently an actual government minister working under David Davis (the guy who wasted practically all of the Article 50 negotiating period before huffing off in a strop because Theresa May's hard-right economically ruinous Chequers proposal wasn't hard-right or economically ruinous enough for his tastes).

Before Theresa May invited this ideological fanatic into government, Baker was actually the head of the secretive ERG group of Tory Brextremists which is now headed up by Jacob Rees-Mogg.

The company Baker has invested in is called Glint Pay Limited, and they've regularly advised clients to invest in physical gold in order to financially insulate themselves from the negative economic impact of a Tory "no deal" Brexit.

This is far from the first example of leading Tories publicly pushing the hardest possible version of Brexit whilst personally insulating themselves from the social and economic disaster they're attempting to trigger.

  • Nigel Lawson (chairman of the Vote Leave campaign) has applied for French residency in order to maintain his own personal Freedom of Movement in Europe as the Brextremists seek to revoke Freedom of Movement from millions of their fellow Brits against their will.

Their behaviour makes it increasingly obvious that all of the leading Tory Brextremists know that the hard-right "no deal" Brexit they're pushing for will trigger a massive economic recession that will likely dwarf the impact of the 2007-08 bankers' insolvency crisis that we've still not even recovered from a full decade later.

The way they're advising their wealthy backers to divest from Britain (into overseas assets, foreign currency, gold) just goes to prove what Brexit is really all about.

Their argument that Brexit is about parliamentary sovereignty has long since dissolved after they sought to over-rule the sovereignty of parliament in the courts, and then included anti-democratic Henry VIII powers in their Brexit legislation to allow Tory ministers to rewrite thousands of laws with no parliamentary scrutiny whatever.

Their argument that it's about the "will of the people" has also crumbled away with their determined opposition to a second EU referendum on the final terms of the Brexit agreement. Apparently, according to them it's important to listen to the "will of the people" when the people are voting blindly on a potential future deal they can't possibly know the final details of, but equally important to deny them a say when the terms of the deal actually become clear!

So what Brexit is really all about is disaster capitalism.

Not the kind of disaster capitalism as described by Naomi Klein that sweeps in after a natural disaster like Hurricane Katrina to socially cleanse neighbourhoods and force the privatisation of public assets.

Nor is it the kind of disaster capitalism that bombed Iraq to smithereens and then handed out £billions in outsourcing contracts to western companies to rebuild the infrastructure, and attempt to keep the peace in the deadly terrorism-riddled power vacuum the disaster capitalists created there.

Brextremist disaster capitalism involves cynically appealing to patriotism in order to trigger a deliberate economic meltdown in your own country in order that your mates in the mega-rich international investment class can swoop in and pick up £billions worth of distressed British assets on the cheap like vultures picking the flesh off a carcass.

The audacity of it is astounding. The Brextremists actually pose as patriots standing up for plucky little Britain against the horrid EU, but their behaviour betrays their true objective: Deliberately wrecking the British economy in order to benefit their friends in the mega-rich international investment class, and to unleash a terrifying hard-right power grab to crush the last remnants of democratic socialism in the ensuing crisis (the NHS, local government services, emergency services, the social welfare system).

The saddest thing is that millions of people remain completely unaware of this increasingly obvious Tory disaster capitalist agenda, and react with the cultish mantra of "Project Fear" to dismiss any and all evidence that a Tory "no deal" Brexit will be a social and economic catastrophe.

All you need to do is look at the furtive betting against Britain on the sly by Tory Brextremists like Steve Baker, and their true agenda shines through.

The doubly ridiculous Tory spin on BAE's Australian warship contract

The Australian government has announced a new deal for the construction of nine Hunter class frigates, but the Tory spin on this story is doubly-misleading and absolutely ridiculous.

The Tories are attempting to present the story as if the contract represents some kind of £20 billion boost for the British economy, but in reality the vast majority of the £20 billion will be spent in Australia, creating Australian jobs, and stimulating demand in the Australian economy.

The only significant benefit to Britain will come indirectly through profits made by the British-based arms company BAE Systems. The biggest single investor in BAE is an American investment company called Capital Group. And one of Capital Group's most notable employees happens to be ... Theresa May's husband!

It's not like we're building the ships and sending them over there, and it's not even like the profit margin will actually make its way back to Britain either, it'll be divvied up amongst the mega-rich multinational investment class.

To put this Tory spin into perspective, just consider how the Australian government have been presenting this deal to their own people (see picture). The overwhelming majority of the investment is staying within Australia, it's going to create thousands of Australian jobs, and it's going to stimulate the Australian economy.

Also consider what BAE themselves have said about the deal making a "significant contribution to the Australian economy" and "creating thousands of jobs, supporting new industries and boosting the national supply chain for decades to come".

Even worse than their misleading presentation as if this contract is somehow a £20 billion boost for Britain, is the way the Tories have misleadingly presented this deal between the Australian government and a multinational arms company as some kind of justification for their Brexit farce.

In reality the Tories know that Brexit is going to be an economic disaster. That's why Michael Ashcroft has been praising Malta as a business base during Brexit. It's why John Redwood keeps telling the public that Brexit will be wonderful whilst telling private investment funds to get their cash out of Britain during the Brexit process. It's why Nigel Lawson is seeking French residency. It's why Jacob Rees-Mogg has opened up a new branch of his investment fund in Ireland.

The behaviour of these leading Brexiteers makes it obvious what's going on.

It's engineered disaster capitalism.

The Brexiteers have engineered the economic disaster that is Brexit and Tory Brextremists like Jacob Rees-Mogg are striving to ensure the disaster as destructive as possible with their constant "no deal" posturing. Meanwhile them and their mates are shifting as much cash as possible out of the UK before the economic implosion, so as to flood back in again like vultures once the Brexit recession hits to pick over the bones and gobble up £billions worth of distressed British assets on the cheap.

The Tories are not only misleadingly dressing up a financial benefit for them and their mega-rich investment class mates as some kind of £20 billion boost for Britain, they're using this deception in order to propagandise for the disastrous hard-right "no deal" Brexit they're plotting, which will also end up benefiting them and their mega-rich chums, but this time at a massive cost to the British public, British workers, and the British economy.

The Tories have positioned themselves over a demographic trapdoor

David Cameron was a purveyor of fanatically right-wing policies like austerity dogma, endless handouts to corporations and the mega-rich, destruction of workers' rights and privatisation mania, but he managed to sweeten the bitter poison pill a bit with some slick presentation, some socially liberal policies (like gay marriage), and a bit of centrist posturing.

Theresa May saw no need to appeal to moderates or the centre-right because she was absolutely certain that chasing the UKIP vote with an extreme-right makeover would win her a massive landslide victory.

She imagined that all she needed to do was devise government policy as if she were writing editorials for the Daily Express (regular outbursts of anti-immigrant rhetoric, threats against the EU, endlessly banging on about scrapping our human rights and clamping down on Internet freedom, bringing back educational apartheid based on selection at the age of 11, badmouthing public services and public sector workers, promising yet more tax-cuts for the corporations and the mega-rich, and constant jingoistic Brexit flag-waving) and the voters would flock to the polls to hand her a super-majority so big she could run the UK as a de facto dictatorship.

The fightback against Theresa May's brand of fanatically right-wing ultra-nationalism wasn't entirely successful because she successfully absorbed a great big chunk of the UKIP vote by waving the Brexit flag she'd opportunistically stolen from the Brexiters that she had opposed during the EU referendum debate (more out of self-serving opportunism than any real political conviction).

Am awful lot of sleepwalking Brexiters simply followed the Brexit flag without even thinking about who was holding it, but there simply weren't enough of them to prevent a massive shock to a complacent political establishment as Theresa May threw her parliamentary majority away in a modern morality tale about vanity and hubris.

The reason for this shock is a huge demographic imbalance between the under-50s who voted strongly in favour of Labour's transformative manifesto, and the over-60s who voted en masse in favour of Theresa May's disgusting prescription of more austerity dogma, more wage repression for people who actually work, more asset-stripping of the UK, more education cuts, and more attacks on our freedoms and civil rights.

Source: James Kanagasooriam
There are many reasons behind this incredible demographic shift, not least the incredible social media virality of unashamedly left-wing independent media sites in comparison to the pro-establishment mainstream media.

It's no coincidence that those most likely to vote for Theresa May's brand of fanatically right-wing ultra-nationalism were also the demographic most likely to have no access to independent media, and who relied almost exclusively on the mainstream media for their political news and views.

The Tories and the political pundit class believed that Theresa May was right and that a thumping Tory-kip victory was inevitable, but when the results came in they reacted with shock and horror because for the first time in decades the English people hadn't voted the way they had been instructed to by the biased mainstream media propaganda merchants and their Tory lords and masters.

Research by Michael Ashcroft revealed a number of very interesting things about the huge generational disparity. The under-50s are very much more likely to believe that social liberalism, feminism, multiculturalism, and environmentalism are positive things than the over-60s.

Meanwhile the only demographic in which over 42% of respondents see unrestrained capitalism as a good thing are the over-64s (presumably because they're retired and they're happy as long as it's other people facing the low wages, job insecurity, and exploitative employment contracts associated with unrestrained capitalism).

There is a massive generational divide in Britain and the Tories' desperate lurch to the extreme-right under Theresa May has admittedly increased Tory appeal amongst the older generations, but it's created a demographic time-bomb by completely trashing Tory support amongst the under-40s.

It's absolutely clear that if the views of the retired matched the views of the working-age population then the Tories would have been annihilated in Theresa May's vanity election, but the problem for the Tories is that they don't have anything whatever to offer the younger generations.

Theresa May's stilted post-election repetition of the same old idiot fodder excuses for austerity dogma makes it absolutely clear that her script writers are totally out of ideas.

Not only are the tories completely out of ideas, but they must also fear that if they did actually have any new ideas, any moved to win back the younger generations with some socially liberal policies and a shift away from the fanatical hard-right territory they currently occupy could cause the fickle blue-kip demographic to abandon the Tory party as rapidly as they rushed to support it in Theresa May's vanity election.

By defining themselves as a bunch of fanatically hard-right ultra-nationalists the Tories have seriously damaged their political brand and positioned themselves over a demographic trapdoor.

Either they try to edge themselves off the trapdoor by abandoning the extreme-right territory and risk losing the fickle blue-kip vote, or they stay where they are and fall through the demographic trapdoor as their over-60 supporter base dies off and the under-40 demographic is bolstered with ever more young people who object to the Tories' hard-right policy of trashing their future in order to lavish ever more handouts on their mega-rich mates as strongly as they object to their extreme-right ultra-nationalist posturing in order to appeal to the blue-kip vote.

How depraved is David Cameron?

So it is alleged that David Cameron put his private parts inside the mouth of a severed pig's head as some kind of depraved initiation to an elitist Oxford society. Nobody can be sure of the veracity of the claims other than those who were there, however it is claimed that there is photographic evidence of the incident, so it should be absolutely clear whether or not it happened from David Cameron's reaction. Either he decides to sue for libel, which would indicate that he believes the photographic evidence doesn't exist, or he'll just sit there and allow everyone to think that he's a "pigfucker" because endless repetition of the unproven allegations wouldn't be quite as damaging as the actual photographic evidence would be.

Aside from the allegations about what David Cameron did to a dead pig's head, there are a number of much more serious, but less headline grabbing issues to consider. One is whether the allegations that he helped a major Tory party donor (Michael Ashcroft) cover up his tax-dodging activities, and another is the desperate hypocrisy of him leading a party hell bent on actually intensifying the failing ideological "war on drugs" when he allegedly took a lot of drugs as a youth. What kind of vindictive bastard would continue sending young people to jail for doing precisely what they themselves did when they were young?

Anyhow it's worth considering the fact that everyone should already have know that David Cameron is a despicable and depraved individual long before the allegations about what he did to the severed head of a pig as a young man came out.
It's public knowledge that Cameron was part of disgusting elitist societies like the Bullingdon Club, who went around doing stuff like burning £50 notes in front of homeless people and trashing restaurants for a laugh.
It's public knowledge that Cameron's party have imposed draconian austerity measures on the poor, the ordinary, the young, the sick and the disabled while handing huge tax cuts to the super-rich minority and to multinational corporations (including the banks who caused the economic crisis in the first place).
It's public knowledge that Cameron is an inveterate liar who repeatedly tells outright lies about the UK economy and his government's economic track record. It doesn't seem to matter how many times he is rebuked by the UK Statistics Authority, he just keeps on repeating the lie that his government is reducing the national debt, when in fact they have actually doubled it, creating more new public debt than every Labour government in history in the process.
It's public knowledge that David Cameron tried to get the UK armed forces to assist the rise of ISIS by bombing the Syrian government. Thankfully this utter insanity was defeated in parliament, causing him to become the first Prime Minister to lose a war vote since 1782. However, the fact that so many MPs recognised the insanity of what he was proposing and defeated him doesn't detract from the utter lunacy of what he was trying to do.
It's public knowledge that David Cameron is so totally and utterly out-of-touch with reality that he actually read out a speech calling for permanent austerity for the poor and ordinary from a golden lectern, while completely surrounded by the trappings of extreme wealth and privilege.
It's public knowledge that David Cameron's government oversaw the longest sustained decline in UK wages since records began, and then tried to dress themselves up as the party for "hardworking people" with an Orwellian propaganda campaign.
It's public knowledge that David Cameron has let Iain Duncan Smith orchestrate a deadly campaign of terror over the lives of millions of the most vulnerable people in society. Given his extraordinary levels of malice, dishonesty and ineptitude it seems likely that the only way IDS has managed to hold onto his job as head of the DWP is that he knows some dirty secrets that are significantly worse than what Cameron is alleged to have done to that severed pig's head.
In my view the allegations about David Cameron's drug taking and the depraved initiation ceremony he took part in are not really very significant. I mean all but the most boring of us did something extremely regrettable in our youth, perhaps not violating a severed pig's head with our genitals, but something embarrassing we'd prefer not to be dredged out and made public knowledge.

Of course the majority of people in this country who are not Tories have had a good laugh about the allegations, but the fact is that what he may have done as a young man is nowhere near as depraved as what he's spent the last five years doing, because the only victims of the alleged pig incident were an already dead pig and Cameron's personal reputation. The human victims of his depraved political ideology are very real and far too numerous to count.

Jimmy Carr vs David Cameron in the Tax Hypocrisy stakes

In June 2012 it was revealed that the comedian Jimmy Carr had been using an elaborate tax avoidance scheme called K2 to avoid paying tax on income of at least £3.3 million. His critics were keen to point out the hypocrisy of having attacked the dodgy tax practicesat Barclays bank on the 10 O'clock Live show whilst simultaneously filtering his own income through an elaborate tax dodging scheme.

WARNING - Video is far from funny, simply embedded as an example of Jimmy's hypocrisy.

Jimmy Carr may be an absolute hypocrite for attacking the Barclays tax dodging scam whilst simultaneously engaging in his own tax dodging activity, but the UK Prime Minister David Cameron is already outdoing him in the hypocrisy stakes by describing Jimmy Carr's tax arrangements as "very dodgy" and "morally wrong".

It is funny how the Prime Minister is prepared to speak out against the tax dodging activities of one of his celebrity critics, but always hides behind the "can't comment on individual cases" clause when it comes to the tax affairs of huge corporations such as Vodafone, Goldman Sachs, Boots, Tesco, Barclays.... or the tax avoidance schemes used by high profile Tory supporters Michael Ashcroft, Philip Green or Gary Barlow. Another aspect to Cameron's hypocrisy is that he quite happily inherited £300,000 from his father, who made millions through the establishment of a tax dodging empire in the wake of Margaret Thatcher's abolition of capital controls in 1979. Yet another aspect of his craven hypocrisy is that the Tory party actually invited some of Britain's biggest tax dodging companies to form working groups to design UK tax policies. Companies invited to participate in these Tory tax policy working groups include serial tax avoiders (such as Vodafone, Shell, Tesco) and tax avoidance facilitators (such as Barclays, AIG, Lloyds).

After the publicity storm and Cameron's critical comments Jimmy Carr was quick to quit the K2 tax dodging scheme and make a public apology which read "I’m no longer involved in it and will in future conduct my financial affairs much more responsibly. Apologies to everyone. Jimmy Carr". Given David Cameron's new found opposition to tax dodging, I'm sure everyone will expect David Cameron to tear up any proposed legislation which included input from tax dodging companies, to publicly apologise for receiving a large inheritance from his father's "dodgy" tax avoidance empire and to publicly explain to big Tory donors and celebrity supporters like Michael Ashcroft and Gary Barlow that he and the Tory party want nothing more to do with them since they are morally repugnant tax avoiding bastards.
