Meanwhile in America ...

If you've seen the classic film The blues Brothers, you'll probably remember the scene where Jake and Elwood express their hatred of Illinois Nazis before driving their bluesmobile at the Nazi parade forcing them to jump off the bridge into the water.

What you may not know is that the Illinois Nazis in the film were based on an actual bunch of Illinois Nazis who regularly marched through Chicago and even attempted to hold a fascist parade through the mainly Jewish town of Skokie in the late 1970s.

Well under Trump's chaotic rule the Republican Party have decided to give the former leader of this Nazi group a free run at the race to become the Republican candidate for the 3rd Congressional District of Illinois!

This isn't a joke or some kind of exaggeration. They've literally left the door open to Arthur Jones by not fielding a single other candidate!

Make no mistake that this guy may have reformed his fascist ways, he's still a full-on anti-Semite, white supremacist, and Hitler fanatic.

Here are a few quotes:
  • "To me the Holocaust is what I said it is: It’s an international extortion racket."
  • "I designed a huge ad, a full page ad appeared in the Milwaukee Journal with a huge swastika right in the centre of the thing. And the Jews had no idea ... imagine that you're a rabbi and you open the paper one morning and all of a sudden bingo, there's a swastika looking at you in the face [laughs]."
  • "The green, red, and black flag of the black militants. That's their goal. They want to take over the south land and drive the white people out, and take it over, and create a black nation."
In fact the guy is so far off to the extreme right that he says that he regrets voting for Donald Trump because "he's surrounded himself with hoardes of Jews"!

Only a leader as inept as Donald Trump would allow an actual Nazi to gain the Republican nomination because they're to chaotically disorganised to find anyone to stand against him in the primary.

The best of #AlternativeFacts

Donald Trump is such a thin-skinned narcissist that the first days of his administration will be remembered for an astoundingly farcical display of truth-denial from the White House rather than any meaningful political initiative.

Trump was clearly furious at the press for pointing out that Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration attracted much bigger crowds that Trump's in 2017.
First into the fray was Trump's press secretary Sean Spicer who furiously denounced the media with claims of some kind of vendetta to "minimise the enormous support", telling quite a few demonstrable lies in the process before storming out of the press conference without actually answering any questions from the press.

Trump's campaign manager Kellyanne Conway then attempted to defend Spicer's lies with the astounding claim that they weren't lies, but actually "alternative facts".
The Twitter response to the public coining of a brand new euphemism for "lies" by a government spokesperson was brilliant, with the #AlternativeFacts hashtag trending for the rest of the day. Here are a few of the best examples:

Several people used #AlternativeFacts as they were originally intended (to make Trump's inauguration seem very much more glorious than it actually was)

Some people pointed out the way that Trump had left his wife behind as he rushed out of the car and up the steps, and then again as he hurried through the door was not "rudeness", but "alternative chivalry"!

People were quick to point out that "alternative facts" probably won't work so well with policemen, teachers or the tax authorities.

Kris Sacrebleu pointed out the chillingly Orwellian nature of "alternative facts".

Daniel Phillips helpfully provided some synonyms to help people get their heads around what "alternative facts" actually are.

The Merriam Webster dictionary offered a helpful definition of the word "fact" for anyone suffering confusion.

And a librarian got in on the act too:

Here are a few more people demonstrating that they get the idea:

Scientists for EU picked up on the similarity between "alternative facts" and Vote Leave campaign pledges.

After just one day in the White House the Orwellian lunacy of "alternative facts" was enough to make people lose patience with the Trump administration.

Possibly the best Tweet of all was this one that shows a very good understanding of the Trumpster thought system: uncomfortable truth = "fake news" / Trump administration lie = "alternative fact".

Chillingly Dan Rather points out that the ones with the most realistic power to stop the insanity of stuff like "alternative facts" are the Republican Party (who allowed themselves to be usurped by Trump in the first place), and hopes that the press (who elevated Trump to the White House with all of the free publicity they gave him) collectively decide to pressure Republican politicians into holding him to account.

Who is to blame for President Trump?

The election of Donald Trump represents a howl of outrage from millions of people who have felt abandoned by the political system. There was no sense or strategy to it, it was just a gigantic "fuck you" to a political establishment who have spent the last four decades pandering to the interests of the super-rich and allowing the erosion of the American middle class and the annihilation of American industry.

The racists, misogynists, fascists and xenophobes obviously came out in force to back the most bigoted presidential candidate in modern times, but there's more to it than that. Of course the bigots in America won the greatest victory of their lives, but they clearly didn't achieve it on their own, there's simply not enough of them.

The smug mainstream media consensus is already being formed that the "uneducated white working class" are to blame for this result, but this particular blame-game ignores a number of other much more significant culprits.

The most obvious culprits to start with are the Republican party elite who allowed their own party to be hijacked by a bigoted and mentally unstable demagogue. A few notable exceptions refused to endorse Trump but the majority of Republican politicians decided that it was in their own self-interest to clamber onto the Trump bandwagon and cheerlead for him, despite knowing full well that he's the most dangerously unhinged candidate ever to run for President.

The problem with blaming the Republicans is that their recent history is stuffed full of terrifyingly unsuitable Presidential candidates. Richard Nixon is rightly remembered as the most dishonest President in history (until now at least). Ronald Reagan was a B movie actor who was clearly suffering dementia by his second term in office. Then there was George "Dubya" Bush who somehow managed to make Reagan look like a towering intellect in comparison. Then in 2012 there was Mitt Romney. Just imagine the insanity of thinking it's a good idea to put forward a ruthless vampire capitalist like Romney when the nation was still suffering the fallout of the global financial sector meltdown!

The problem with blaming the Republicans for selecting bizarre and terrifying presidential candidates is that it's like blaming the sun for setting at night or attempting to stop the tide from coming in by shouting at it. It's just what they do.

If we're looking for a particular voter demographic to blame for Trump, then there's a much more obvious one than the white working class scapegoats. The white evangelical Christians came out in force to back the least Christian presidential candidate the US has ever seen, and they're
getting an astonishing free pass from the majority of the media elite for their hypocrisy. The exit polls suggest that Trump won the evangelical Christian vote by 81% - 16%. In the key swing state of Florida the margin was an even more emphatic 85% - 13%.

Trump is a divisive, arrogant, intolerant, sexist, abusive, casino-building, multiple divorcee and sexual predator, but millions of so-called Christians flocked to the polls to give him the strongest evangelical endorsement of any presidential candidate in decades.

It's actually pretty easy to understand working class Americans sending a massive "fuck you" to the political establishment after the four decades of neglect they've suffered, but it's almost impossible to comprehend the sheer hypocrisy of a bunch of hard-core Christians flocking to the polls to vote for a deeply unchristian bigot like Donald Trump, especially when a significant number of evangelical ministers came out and warned them not to.

But then again blaming white evangelicals for their abject hypocrisy is as futile as blaming the Republican Party for putting forward yet another crackpot presidential candidate. White evangelicals flocking to the polls to vote Republican is as reliable as the Republicans picking terrifying presidential candidates for them to vote for.

In my view the most blameworthy people of all are the Democratic Party elitists who worked tirelessly to undermine Bernie Sanders and rig the Democratic primaries against him. These people deliberately crushed the Sanders revolution simply because they believed that it was Hillary Clinton's turn to be President.

The polls clearly showed that Sanders had a much better chance of defeating Trump, but the Democratic Party elite and pretty much all of their anti-democratic super delegates sided with Clinton, but it was much worse than that. The evidence is absolutely clear that elite Democrats deliberately rigged the contest to ensure that Bernie Sanders couldn't win the Democratic nomination.

The folly of derailing Bernie Sanders' unprecedented grass-roots democracy campaign in favour of appointing the most pro-establishment Wall Street friendly candidate imaginable is all too obvious now that Trump has won, but it was always a deeply risky gamble given the revolutionary mood that has been growing in global politics since the global financial sector insolvency crisis.

People all over the world have been crying out for alternatives to the complacent political elites who allowed the global financial sector meltdown to happen in the first place, then even more unforgivably loaded the cost of the crisis onto the backs of ordinary people whilst allowing the super-rich minority who actually caused the crisis to carry on making themselves even richer than ever.

Incredibly the Democratic Party elitists decided to completely ignore this revolutionary mood and install their favoured Wall Street backed puppet candidate rather support the guy who was running an inspirational grass-roots anti-establishment campaign that was tapping into the public anger at a political system that was no longer seen to serve the interests of ordinary people.

We'll never know whether Bernie Sanders would have beaten Trump because the Democratic Party elitists colluded with Clinton to prevent the possibility. However we can still be reasonably confident that Sanders' anti-establishment grass-roots democracy campaign would have taken an awful lot more wind out of Trump's anti-establishment rhetoric than Hillary Clinton's insipid, uninspiring "more of the same", "be thankful for the crumbs you've got" campaign.

There's no point in blaming the bigots and racists (they were always going to vote for Trump). There's little point in blaming the Republicans for once again putting forward a lunatic Presidential candidates (that's just what they do). There's no point in blaming the white working class for saying a big "fuck you" to a political system that has callously neglected them for the last four decades. The most blameworthy people are clearly the out of touch Democratic Party elitists who deliberately colluded with Hillary Clinton to destroy their own anti-establishment candidate (who had much better and more believable anti-establishment credentials than the bigoted billionaire Trump).

It's bad enough that they destroyed their own anti-establishment candidate, but the decision to crush Sanders is even worse considering they did it in order to put forward a living embodiment of the despised political elite.

Everyone who supported the Sanders campaign will remember the disgustingly displays of smug sneering contempt from Clinton supporters as it became clear she was going to win the nomination. These arrogant and patronising displays of outright contempt towards Sanders' genuine grass-roots political revolution and everyone who supported it was what lost the Democrats an election they should have won as a landslide.

The Democratic Party elitists rigged their leadership contest in favour of their pro-establishment candidate and then they sneered at all those who wanted to change the system to make it fairer and more responsive to the needs of the people. By doing this they took away the opportunity for America to restructure itself in a coherent and democratic manner and left the masses with the appalling choice of their chosen "more of the same" candidate, or sending a massive and utterly reckless "fuck you" to the political establishment.

By creating such an appalling choice for the electorate the out-of-touch Democratic Party elitists ended up handing the keys to the White House to a terrifyingly unstable right-wing demagogue.

In hindsight can any of them honestly say that President Trump is a better outcome than the idea of President Sanders that terrified them so much that they rigged their own internal party democracy in order to prevent it?

Donald Trump's incoherent and distasteful Twitter bragging

Donald Trump's disgusting brand of hatemongering rhetoric is becoming increasingly familiar. His willingness to lie, slur, fearmonger and generally appeal to the basest human instincts in order to generate ever more publicity for himself is appalling, but clearly successful given that he's managed to convince so many millions of Republicans to endorse him as their candidate to become President of the United States.

Trump's misogyny and anti-Hispanic racism are disgusting to behold, but his anti-Muslim sentiments really are something else. The Republicans have thrown up some pretty awful Presidential candidates in the past (their last candidate was the appalling vampire capitalist Mitt Romney) but nothing to compare with Donald Trump. His proposed policy of banning Muslims from entering the United States (even if they are US citizens) is clearly a bigoted and deeply illiberal political policy. I've challenged people who support the imposition of religious purity tests at US borders to explain how such a policy is compatible with the US constitution in the past, but to no avail. People who support the bigoted collective punishment of millions of innocent people are not generally the type to think things through carefully or explain their reasoning.

Donald Trump's reaction to the Orlando nightclub massacre was appalling even by the disgustingly low standards he has already set for himself. Trump used the murder of dozens of people as an opportunity to gloat and congratulate himself on Twitter and then regurgitate his Nazi style policy of imposing religious purity tests at US borders.

After getting over the initial revulsion that somebody would use such a tragedy to pat themselves on the back and promote the kind of deeply bigoted agenda that many of the victims would surely have opposed, it's also worth noting how staggeringly incoherent Trump actually is.

The Killer Omar Mateen was a New York born US citizen, so it's absolutely clear that Donald Trump's religious purity tests at US borders would have had no influence on the situation at all (other than probably stirring up more domestic extremists full of rage at the US policy of openly discriminating against innocent Muslims).

The more we learn about Omar Mateen the more ridiculous Trump's distasteful gloating looks. Mateen was known to the US secret services for his extremist views, but he was still allowed to legally buy the kind of powerful assault rifle that he used to carry out the biggest mass killing in modern US history. Surely the answer to this problem isn't to ban peaceful law-abiding Muslims from entering the US, but to ban people from buying the kinds of gun that nobody outside the military would ever actually need to use (especially if they have been identified as potential terrorists by the FBI).

The view that this massacre had more to do with the easy availability of powerful weapons to violent and unstable people than the religious background of the murderer is supported by the evidence. Mateen's former wife has said that he was a violent and unstable person, the FBI admit that he was known to them for his extremist views, yet he was allowed to legally buy the weapons he used to carry out the massacre. Additionally it has been claimed by people who knew him that Mateen barely practiced Islam at all.

The main issue isn't that Mateen is of Islamic origin, it's that a violent and emotionally unstable person who had been investigated by the FBI for his extremist views was allowed to legally purchase the weapons he used to massacre dozens of people.

The trouble for Trump is obvious. He counts an awful lot of extreme-right gun nuts amongst his supporters, so any attempt to clamp down on the availability of powerful assault weapons to violent and emotionally unstable people with extremist views would surely cost him votes, so instead of even admit what the actual problem is, he's decided to bypass it completely by using the tragedy as an excuse to indulge in a spot of bigotry and distasteful self-congratulation.

It's bad enough that Trump opportunistically used this tragedy to wheel out his bigoted and unconstitutional policy of imposing religious purity tests at US borders, but slapping himself on the back about how right he is when his Nazi style border policy would have had no effect at all on the massacre just goes to show how fundamentally incoherent his bigoted policies actually are.

Why Donald Trump is such a threat to civilisation

Donald Trump is clearly a highly unstable individual who terrifies anybody with the few braincells necessary to spot a power-crazed wannabe fascist demagogue. His outrageously ill-conceived proposals to ban all Muslims from entering the US are about as fascist as it's possible to be. Just imagine if such a threat was made against Jews by a leading political candidate!

The factor that makes Donald Trump such a threat to civilisation isn't that he's a crackpot with a tendency for blurting out fascist policies then refusing to back down because his ego can't tolerate him ever admitting that he was wrong. The factor that makes Donald Trump such a threat to civilisation is the self-interest of the Republican Party.

Trump's proposals to impose religious tests on immigrants and to ban Muslim American citizens from returning to the US are so extreme and so unconstitutional that he should obviously be thrown out of the Republican Party. He's even refusing to make exemptions to his ban on Muslims entering the US for US Muslim soldiers and intelligence officers who have been risking their lives serving overseas! How anyone in the Republican Party can accept such extremist nonsense is pretty baffling on the face of it.

The problem for Republicans is that they know that if they do throw Donald Trump out of the party he's going to stand as an independent presidential candidate and split the right-wing vote, which would almost certainly mean a huge win for whoever the Democrats put forward.

Even if Trump isn't thrown out of the party now, he's far too egotistical to go quietly if he doesn't win the nomination. If the less extremist Republicans all band together to support a candidate who doesn't promote outright fascism, then Trump is still likely to strop off in a huff, stand as an independent and split the Republican vote anyway.

This means that the debate for Republicans is about which is is the worst scenario. Donald Trump using their party to usher in the era of overt American fascism, or an easy win for the Democrats.

Judging by the fact that Trump hasn't been expelled from the Republican Party for his extremist ranting suggests that Republicans actually prefer the idea of their party being used as a vehicle for the promotion of outright fascism than the idea of a win for whoever the Democratic select as their candidate!

We all know that right-wing politics is all about the promotion of self-interest above community interests, after all there was "no such thing as society" according to Margaret Thatcher as she wreaked industrial destruction, mass unemployment and life destroying poverty on communities right across the UK in the 1980s. The problem is that the price of Republicans putting their own self-interest first at this juncture is allowing the rise of a wannabe fascist demagogue, and the ushering in of the era of overt American fascism.

It seems that Republicans would actually rather that happen than lose their third consecutive election to the Democrats though!

How bigotry and cowardice are becoming fundamental Republican "values"

The contest to lead the Republican Party into the next Presidential election would be a hilarious spectacle if it weren't for the very real fear that the American public might well end up electing the likes of Donald Trump or Ben Carson as their President (and the commander of the most powerful military the world has ever seen).

This fear is not without reason either. Not only did the American public (kind of) elect George W. Bush in the first place, they actually re-elected him despite the fact that he let 9/11 happen on his watch, then gave the Islamist fanatics the stateless chaos they thrive in by attacking Iraq when not a single one of the 9/11 terrorists had anything to do with Iraq (15 out of the 19 were Saudi Arabians)!

Bigotry and cowardice

Donald Trump and Ben Carson seem to be engaged in a competition to come up with the most reactionary, bigoted and unconstitutional declarations possible. Whether it's plans to create a Nazi style national database of Muslims, or to impose Christianity tests on Syrian refugees, the Republican Party seems to have fully embraced religious bigotry and outright cowardice as core principles of Republican politics.

Nazi undertones

Many people have drawn parallels between the Republican Party proposals for a government blacklist of Muslims, and the treatment of Jews by the Nazis. When challenged about the similarities between his policy of discrimination against Muslims and the policies of discrimination towards Jews in 1930s Germany, Donald Trump simply evaded the questions.

Rabbi Jack Moline of the Interfaith Alliance attacked Trump's plans to create a Nazi style Muslim blacklist by saying "My father was in World War II, and he fought to preserve America against what the Nazis were doing," he said. "This is exactly why there is an America, to not be like that".

Victim blaming

The evidence is absolutely clear that the atrocities in Paris were masterminded and carried out by French citizens, not by Syrian refugees. Yet the Republican Party have taken to openly fearmongering about Syrian refugees, who are fleeing exactly the same breed of Wahabist fanatics as those who carried out the Paris atrocities.

Using fear over what happened in Paris to attack Syrian refugees is about as clear an example of victim blaming as it's possible to see.

American values?

As an outsider it's absolutely amazing to see how these leading Republican candidates seem to be getting away with such openly bigoted policies. I always thought that stuff like religious freedom, the separation of church and state and the provision of a safe haven to the victims of religious persecution were fundamental, pretty much unquestionable American values? Yet here we have people like Trump and Carson shitting all over these American values, and somehow maintaining their popularity.

The idea of shutting the door to Syrian refugees (unless they pass some kind of warped Christianity test) seems about as contrary to proclaimed American values as is possible to imagine. Not only is turning away the victims of persecution on the basis of their religious beliefs contrary to the American principle of religious freedom, it's also an appalling display of ignorant cowardice in the wake of the Paris atrocities given that the perpetrators were French and Belgian citizens, not Syrian refugees.

Collective punishment

Using the Paris atrocities to call for state sponsored discrimination against all Muslims in the United States is appalling stuff. Since when was it an American trait to collectively punish all people within a particular group for the actions of a tiny minority within that group?

In fact, given that this global wave of barbaric Wahabist terrorism has been carried out by non-American Muslims, it's possible to argue that the Republican Party are planning to collectively punish a group of people (law-abiding American Muslims) for the heinous actions of people completely outside that group (non-American Wahabist fanatics)

Hypocrisy

Maybe it's worth comparing these Republican calls for collective discrimination against Muslims with the way they might react to calls for some kind of government blacklist for gun owners in response to the appalling killing sprees that keep happening in American schools and colleges?

Surely they'd argue that it's wrong to clamp down on millions of law abiding gun owners due to the crimes of a small minority?

Of course the Republicans would wail and scream at any proposals to monitor and discriminate against all gun owners, but they seem incapable of seeing their own hypocrisy when they decide they want to collectively punish all American Muslims for the crimes of Islamist fanatics from elsewhere in the world.

What about Saudi Arabia?

Instead of fearmongering about Syrian refugees and devising plans to collectively punish American Muslims for the crimes of foreign terrorists, perhaps it might make a little more sense for American politicians to reappraise their relationship with the barbaric Saudi Arabian regime?

15 of the 19 terrorists on September 11th 2001 were Saudis and the barbaric Islamist fanatics committing terrorist atrocities all over the world follow the same brand of militant Wahabist fanaticism as the Saudi regime, yet leading Republicans would rather clamp down on law abiding American Muslims rather than confront Saudi Arabia over their role in spreading their dangerous fanatical Wahabist ideology all over the world.

Where are the Republican moderates?

Surely there must be someone within the Republican Party capable of seeing that mass discrimination against law abiding American Muslims is an unjustifiable response to the actions of non-American Wahabist fanatics elsewhere in the world?

Assuming moderates within the Republican Party still exist, and that the whole show hasn't been completely taken over by TeaBaggers, why are they so quiet? Where are the Republicans asking questions like whether the maintenance of a government religious blacklist goes against the First Amendment right to religious freedom? Or how does the maintenance of a massive government blacklist for all Muslims fit in with the small state ideology that the Republicans claim to support?

To an outsider it really does seem like the lunatics have taken over the Republican Party asylum, and that there is nobody with the requisite level of sanity to restore some semblance of order.

Conclusion

Perhaps the most embarrassing thing for Americans must be that these Republican anti-Muslim policies are a display of appalling cowardice on the international stage.

Do Americans really want their politicians to foster and project such ignorant fear of displaced Syrian women and children when France is still vowing to take in tens of thousands of Syrian refugees, despite what happened in Paris?

Do Americans really want their politicians projecting such ignorance and cowardice when Vladimir Putin is so determined to play the fearless Islamist-killing hardman on the world stage?

In the UK David Cameron has so far resisted the cowardly (and staggeringly impractical) petition to "close the UK borders until ISIS is defeated", so do Americans really want their politicians to come across as even more cowardly and opportunistic than the dish-faced, over-privileged walking embodiment of incompetence us Brits have to suffer?

Is this kind of ignorant bigoted cowardice really the kind of image Americans want their politicians projecting on the world stage? Somehow I doubt it. But then I was naive enough to think that the American public couldn't possibly have been crazy enough to re-elect George W. Bush, and I was proven wrong, so perhaps ignorance, bigotry and cowardice are what the American public want from their politicians?
