The Green Party's only MP Caroline Lucas has completely and utterly lost the plot over Brexit. For years she was one of my absolute favourite politicians. She led the Greens when they were the only UK-wide party opposing ruinous austerity fanaticism (Labour pushed pathetic austerity-lite rubbish until this pathetic non-opposition cost them the 2015 general election and triggered the Corbyn fightback against the "centrist" policy of imitating Tory austerity fanaticism, rather than opposing it). Lucas has also consistently been on the right side of important parliamentary votes (alongside Jeremy Corbyn, Diane Abbott, John McDonnell, and Dennis Skinner she was the only other MP with sufficient principles to vote against Theresa May's racist hostile environment, David Cameron's disastrous war-mongering in Libya, and Theresa May's enhanced state snooping powers, and George Osborne's welfare vandalism bill). Over the last few months it's been bad enough watching the Greens voluntarily turning themselves into recruitment agents for the austerity enabling, privatisation scamming, welfare vandalising, workers' rights attacking, fracking tax cutting, disability persecuting, student impoverishing, electoral reform abandoning Lib-Dem warmongers, but Lucas' "fantasy cabinet" of herself and ten all-white, all-female MPs is an extraordinary blowout. Here are details on the ten other women Lucas wants to orchestrate a "foil Brexit at any cost" coup with: Anna Soubry: Ex-Tory Soubry talks a good game pretending to oppose Brexit, but when it came to the crunch she actually voted in favour of Theresa May's hard Brexit shambles of a Withdrawal Agreement! Soubry has also made it absolutely clear that she'd prefer a ruinous Tory-administered Brexit than stopping Brexit under a Corbyn-led Labour government. She also referred to the ruinous living standards destroying policies of the austerity coalition that laid the groundwork for Brexit as "marvellous". Heidi Allen: Another ex-Tory. As a Tory she once cried in parliament about the devastating impact of Tory welfare vandalism to gather "compassionate Conservative" headlines, before wilfully marching through the lobby to vote in favour of even more of the welfare vandalism and devastating cuts she was crying over. She's also responsible for the stupidest and most dangerous Remainer idea yet, which is to just let No Deal go ahead, then try to magically undo it using retroactive legislation! Jo Swinson: She isn't a Tory, but she might as well be, having been more loyal to the Tory whip during the ruinous austerity coalition than numerous Tory MPs (including recent Tory leadership candidate Jeremy Hunt!). Whatever horrible abuse and economically illiterate nonsense the Tories were pushing, Swinson wilfully voted it all through, refusing to protest by resigning as Employment Minister, even when they launched their vile and unlawful policy of protecting bad bosses by pricing low-income workers out of the justice system with £1,200 upfront Tribunal Fees. She's also bankrolled by the owner of a fracking operation and voted in favour of Cameron and Osborne's massive tax cut for onshore fracking (which makes her a very odd bedfellow for a Green MP). Justine Greening: If you're going to stuff your "fantasy cabinet" full of ex-Tory austerity enforcers and Lib-Dem austerity enablers, you might as well include a sitting Tory MP just to hammer home the point that opposing the austerity fanaticism that caused Brexit in the first place will be an absolute non-priority. Aside from being a horrifying austerity-enforcer, Greening was also personally in charge of the mass privatisation of state schools in England. The vast majority of Brits believe that schools should be run as not-for-profit public services, but somehow Lucas wants to include a hard-right school-privatising extremist in her "fantasy cabinet". Nicola Sturgeon: Sturgeon does occasionally let herself down with cheap partisan political point scoring (which is regrettable, but understandable given the tides of absolute filth that are spewed in her direction), but in general she's a really strong and popular leader. The main problem with the inclusion of SNP figures like Sturgeon and Kirsty Blackman is that Swinson and the Lib-Dems have outright refused to work with the SNP to stop Brexit because they actually see preventing another Scottish independence referendum as a much higher priority than stopping Brexit. Liz Saville Roberts: Including Plaid Cymru's only female MP is an obvious choice if you're doing a stupid identity politics driven all-female "fantasy cabinet". She has been a hard-working MP since arriving in parliament in 2015, and she's on the decent side of parliamentary divisions the majority of the time. It's hard to see how an alliance between a Welsh independence MP and the ultra-unionist Lib-Dems could ever really hold up for very long though. Sylvia Hermon: Again, there's nothing particularly wrong with the former UUP, now independent Northern Irish MP Sylvia Hermon. It's just an odd selection to pick a solitary independent MP from Northern Ireland, unless the reason is the tokenism of picking the only Brexit-sceptic MP in Northern Ireland (the DUP are hard Brexit militants and Sinn Féin refuse their Westminster seats on principle). Emily Thornberry: Reaching out to a serving Labour Party cabinet minister to engage in a plot to sideline Labour from the anti-No Deal fightback is a bold move, but Thornberry is surely far too sensible a political operator to ditch her career by joining this ludicrous identity politics publicity stunt. Yvette Cooper: Cooper is one of the oddest picks of all. Yes she's involved herself in opposing Brexit, but she's stopped short of calling for another referendum (unlike Labour front bench MPs like Diane Abbott, who has repeatedly made the case for a final say referendum on Brexit).
The inclusion of a load of pro-austerity, pro-privatisation, pro-fracking, Heathrow expansion-supporting, solar subsidy slashing MPs in Lucas' "fantasy cabinet" just goes to show how wildly she's lost her way. She won so much admiration for her principled stances on austerity, welfare, privatisation, and the environment, and now she's bulldozing the lot into a fire pit in order to cavort with hard-right austerity enablers and fracking advocates!
The idea of gender exclusion is absolutely terrible too. Anyone who is genuinely opposed to Brexit must understand that a ludicrous identity politics dick-counting exercise is a pointless distraction. Anyone who thinks an unprincipled loudmouth like Anna Soubry is more of an asset to the Brexit fightback than Dominic Grieve or Keir Starmer, simply because she's female, is absolutely out of their god-damned tree.
An all-white cabinet which includes several Brexit enablers, whilst excluding significantly more anti-Brexit BAME women like Diane Abbott, Dawn Butler, Marsha de Cordova, and Rupa Huq is extraordinary. And their exclusion makes no sense either. Lucas reached out to Thornberry who is in Corbyn's shadow cabinet, so she could have reached out to Abbott and Butler too, and she reached out to Cooper who is a Labour back bencher, meaning there must be some other reason she decided not to involve BAME Labour backbenchers like Huq and de Cordova.
One of the most worrying things is that nobody in the Green Party seems able or willing to take her to one side and ask her to stop this increasingly erratic and damaging behaviour. There's absolutely no way that this all-female all-white "fantasy cabinet" idea including a load of austerity-enablers, privatisation fanatics, and environmental vandals was approved at Green Party conference, so she's not only making a fool of herself, she's also making a mockery of the Green Party's claim to be the most democratic and accountable party in UK politics.
The whole thing seems to be a desperate last-ditch effort to exclude Corbyn and the Labour-left from the process, even though it's absolutely obvious that the support of the Labour-left would be absolutely vital if Lucas ever gets the "another roll of the dice" referendum she's expended so much energy on demanding (whilst ignoring the role austerity fanaticism played in causing Brexit in the first place).
And last but not least the whole idea of a "foil Brexit at any cost" cross-bench coup is absolutely terrible anyway. If you wanted to think of the ideal way of empowering Boris Johnson to seize the moral high ground and romp to a general election victory, an unelected Westminster establishment clique overturning Brexit without even a General Election or Referendum result to give them a mandate would be pretty much exactly what the Brextremists would be wishing for!
Caroline Lucas is far from the only person to have been driven to absolute insanity by Brexit, but seeing a strong and principled woman I really admired degenerate to the point of proposing ludicrous unworkable nonsense that burns all of her preexisting principles to ashes is definitely the saddest case of Brexit Brain Worms yet.

Let's be honest. We're destroying this planet. Just look at the millions of tons of plastic in the oceans. Look at the way insects are dying off in unprecedented numbers. And look at the fact that every single one of the five hottest years on record have occurred in the last five years. Mindless consumerism and profit-fixated capitalism are not just trashing the planet, they're trashing the futures of the younger generations, many of whom are understandably angry about it. They're too young to be allowed to vote in elections, but they've found a way to express their political opinions through the School Strike for Climate protests that manifested all over the world today. Anyone who understands the essential political truth that proper political engagement involves more than stuffing a bit of paper into a box every few years should be delighted that so many young people are learning to raise their political voices before they even get to voting age. But Theresa May and the Tories are far from pleased. The idea of young activists demanding political action frightens the hell out of them because they're repulsed by anything that might get in the way of their project to transfer as much wealth and power as possible to the mega-rich elitist class who entirely bankroll their party. Theresa May's unbelievably patronising comments about the School Strike for Climate protests included accusations that the kids were being "disruptive" and "wasting time".
The Daily Mail hack, relentless Tory cheerleader and wife of the Tory environment secretary Sarah Vine went even further with an extraordinary claim that 99.9% of the kids who went on the protest had no real concerns about the planet whatever, and saw it as nothing more than "an excellent opportunity to get out of doing any work". So the subtext to the Tory stance is absolutely clear. Your concerns are irrelevant, your attempts to engage with politics are not just disruptive, but they're also completely insincere for 999 out of every 1,000 of you too!
Way to appeal to future voters Tory geniuses! Politicians from other parties adopted an entirely different tone to demonstrate that they were listening carefully to the concerns of the younger generations. Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn said the young protesters were "right to feel let down by the generations before them", Caroline Lucas of the Greens described the widespread protests as "most hopeful thing that's happened in years", and Nicola Sturgeon of the SNP said the protests were "a cause for optimism in an often dark world". The Tory party are already utterly toxic amongst the younger generations as a result of their introduction of rip-off university fees (aspiration taxes that over 3/4 of students will never pay off despite entire working lifetimes of paying a 9% education tax on their disposable income), massive cuts to school funding since 2010, the deliberate and sustained under-investment in the infrastructure and services that generate future economic prosperity, and last but not least their hard-right ultranationalist interpretation of the 2016 Brexit vote. But this unbelievably patronising attitude to young people raising their political voices is the glitter on the Tory turd. The Tory stance seems to be that "kids can't vote, so fuck 'em", but it'll obviously only be a few years before these kids at the protest today become adults, so the Tory attitude isn't just patronising and dismissive, but also incredibly short-sighted too
This Tory political shortsightedness when it comes to listening to future voters is decidedly ironic given that political shortsightedness about environmental issues was one of the core themes of the youth protest. So yes, kids skipped a few lessons today to protest about what they believe in, but the patronising toxicity of Theresa May and the Tories' reactions to their protest provides a much bigger life lesson than anything they could have learned in school: 'Never Vote Tory'.

One of the easiest ways to get an idea of how extreme the situation in Catalonia is, just imagine if the same scenario had been playing out in Scotland.
If this was happening in Scotland
Imagine that Nicola Sturgeon had used her democratic mandate from the Scottish parliament to unilaterally call another independence referendum, and that Theresa May's responses were to launch a sustained campaign of cyber attacks against the Scottish government and pro-independence websites.
Let's say that the cyber-attacks were an inconvenience, but the referendum went ahead anyway, so on the day of the referendum Theresa May sent thousands of police from English forces into Scotland to steal ballot boxes, drag women out of polling stations by their hair, beat up Scottish pensioners, and brutally attack crowds of non-violent Scottish civilians, all recorded by onlookers and broadcast to the world via social media.
Let's say that Theresa May refused to condemn, or even acknowledge the violence.
Then let's say that the Queen makes a speech in which she also refuses to condemn the violence, and blames the Scottish government, and the Scottish people for what is happening, and in front of a portrait of Henry VIII (who sent Edward Seymour to pillage and slaughter in Scotland).
Now let's say that a loud-mouthed member of Theresa May's cabinet decided to issue a veiled death threat against Nicola Sturgeon, but Theresa May and the Tories refuse to reprimand, let alone sack the blabber-mouthed gibbon who made the threats.
Now let's say that the ruling establishment in London decide to arrest the heads of civic Scottish independence groups (Common Weal, Radical Independence Campaign) and imprisoned them without trial.
Let's say that in response to calls for dialogue from Nicola Sturgeon, Theresa May's next move is to continue refusing to talk, and to actually collude with Jeremy Corbyn in order to shut down the Scottish parliament, take over control of the Scottish police force, and impose direct Westminster rule on Scottish broadcast media.
Do you think this sequence of events would crush Scotland into submission to London rule, or do you think it would probably have completely the opposite effect?
Similarities and differences
Of course it's not possible to draw exact parallels, but the similarities are uncanny. Both Theresa May and Mariano Rajoy are hard-right Prime Ministers with too few MPs to form a majority government. Both are far too weak to sack ministers who speak out of line (Boris Johnson and Pablo Cascado who issued the veiled death threat against the Catalan President spring to mind). Additionally both the Catalan President Carles Puigdemont and the Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon have established clear democratic mandates from their own parliaments to hold referendums on independence.
There are a few obvious differences too though. Although Scotland has obviously suffered tragic levels of economic neglect at the hands of the Westminster establishment, and been used as a testing ground for vile Tory policies like Poll Tax and the Bedroom Tax, they haven't suffered anything like the scale of repression that Catalans have. It's important to remember that within living memory Catalonia was ruled from Madrid by the fascist Franco dictatorship who banned the Catalan language, executed the Catalan President (Lluís Companys), and tried to eradicate the Catalan cultural identity.
Another major difference is that although I believe in the abolition of the British monarchy, I'm reasonably confident that the British royal family would not be anything like as foolish and unstatesmanlike as king Felipe. Although their inclination would obviously be to side with the Westminster establishment, there's no way they would make such an obviously biased political intervention. Even if Theresa May pleaded with the Queen to do it, she would be unlikely to agree to dramatically escalate the situation by spewing British nationaist rhetoric, condemning Scotland and the Scottish people, and actually doing it in front of a portrait of one of her ancestors who attacked and repressed the people of Scotland.
And one other obvious difference is that although Jeremy Corbyn opposes Scottish independence, there's absolutely no way he'd imitate the mistake of the Spanish socialist leader Pedro Sánchez by colluding with Theresa May to shut down the Scottish parliament, seize control of the Scottish police, and impose Westminster rule on Scottish broadcasters. Love him or hate him, Corbyn has stuck by his principles for decades, so anything other than calls for dialogue and deescalation would be a massive betrayal of the hundreds of thousands of people who have flocked to the Labour Party to support his leadership. Conclusion
Although it's obviously impossible to draw an exact parallel between what is happening in Catalonia, and what could be imposed on Scotland if Nicola Sturgeon were to push on with another independence referendum, there are many similarities.
Just imagine for a moment that the Westminster political class responded in a similar manner to the way the Spanish nationalists in Madrid have (cyber war, violent repression of non-violent Scots by English police, taking of political prisoners, Tory government ministers issuing death threats, abolition of the Scottish parliament, and politically motivated take overs of the Scottish police and broadcast media).
Do you think the Scottish people would take this lying down and meekly submit to continued London rule? Or do you think this kind of violent and profoundly anti-democratic display of British nationalism would have precisely the opposite effect and fuel the campaign for Scottish independence?

Just look at the state of this bar chart from the Scottish Tories. Just imagine how thick you must imagine your target audience to be in order to try to pull off such a brazen misrepresentation.
The bar chart features on a remarkably pathetic Tory party leaflet that only mentions their own party 6 times and details precisely no policies from the Tory Westminster government whatever (the General Election is about picking MPs to sit in Westminster isn't it?). Conversely this absurd piece of propaganda mentions the Scottish National Party and their leader Nicola Sturgeon an incredible 19 times.
What is more is that the Scottish Tories actually accuse the SNP of being "obsessed" with the idea of an independence referendum in a leaflet that is 100% dedicated to the subject of opposing an independence referendum and mentions it 7 times!
Instead of attempting to persuade unionists that it's their duty to fight for the union that they support in a second independence referendum, they're basically admitting that they know that they've lost before the date has even been set, and that their only chance of stopping it is to try to obstruct the democratic will of the Scottish Parliament (a hubristic "do as you're told" tactic that can only end in eventual defeat).
Imagine how thick you'd have to be in order to swallow this self-contradictory and brazenly misleading drivel from the Scottish Tories, especially in light of the appalling track record the Tories have in Scotland.
From using Scotland as a testing ground for their hated Poll Tax experiment to relegating Scottish constituencies to second class status in Westminster so they can't vote on English laws, but retaining the right of English Tory MPs to vote on Scottish laws like the Scotland Act (from which every amendment by Scottish MPs was removed by English Tory MPs), the Tories have done more to turn the Scottish electorate away from Westminster rule than the SNP ever have.
It beggars belief that Scottish unionists are so blinded by their hatred of the concept of Scottish independence that they're willing to actually embrace the toxic Tories who are actually the ones to have done more to promote the cause of Scottish independence through their misrule over Scotland than the SNP ever did, but it certainly seems to be the case if the polling figures in the woefully misleading Tory bar chart are anything to go by.

The Daily Mail's decision to trivialise the meeting between Nicola Sturgeon and Theresa May was hardly surprising stuff from an extreme-right hate comic with a long history of promoting fascism, bigotry, sexism and homophobia. Other people have complained extensively about the sexist nature of the "Legs-it" headline but few have pointed out that the rest of the article is a load of absolute twaddle finished of with an astoundingly hypocritical conclusion. The article was written by the obnoxious Sarah Vine (spouse of the Tory MP, school privatiser, leading anti-intellectual, historical revisionist and high profile Brexit campaigner Michael Gove) so it's no surprise that the article declared Theresa May the winner of the women's style competition, but some of the prose looked like the kind of stuff a creepy stalker would write about his victims rather than an article that has been given the front page lead in Britain's "newspaper of the year"! Apparently Theresa May has "famously long extremities" and "elegant" fingers, while Nicola Sturgeon has "more shapely shanks" than Theresa May and "chocolate button eyes".
The only shocking thing about this kind of sexist Daily Mail analysis of female physical appearance is that the women under scrutiny were adult females for a change, rather than underage teenage girls. The creepy obsession with the physical appearance of the two politicians who will have the most influence over the future direction of the UK was finished off with one of the most extraordinarily hypocritical warnings against Scottish independence you're ever likely to come across. Apparently the wife of one of the most high profile Brexiters of all thinks Scottish independence is a bad idea because it would be "a wild, dangerous leap into the unknown, a glorious moment of rebellion which could all too easily lead to a lifetime of regrets"!
Are Daily Mail readers really so intensely stupid that they're incapable of grasping the idea that "a wild, dangerous leap into the unknown, a glorious moment of rebellion which could all too easily lead to a lifetime of regrets" is actually a perfect description of Brexit, and that a referendum on Scottish independence would be a chance for the Scottish electorate to actually escape this wanton act of social and economic self-harm?

Sometimes the best strategy isn't to campaign with everything you've got, but to just sit quietly for a while and allow your debating opponents to make absolute tits of themsleves. The angry Little Englander ranting on about how much he hates Scotland and the Scottish people in the video below is a perfect example of someone making their opponents' argument for them. Before you click on the video to see for yourself please don't think that this guy is representative of everyone south of the border. Many of us wish the Scottish people all the best as they seek freedom from the corrupt out-of-touch elitists who run the Westminster establishment. I supported Scottish independence the last time around, and I continue to support it now. My only regret is that there's practically no chance of my beloved Yorkshire ever establishing an opportunity to escape the elitist Westminster cabal too. This guy doesn't represent all English people, but his hate-fuelled and obscenity laden rhetoric is definitely representative of a large and increasingly vocal minority in England. An obnoxious, ignorant and bigoted extreme-right minority who have been massively empowered by Brexit to such an extent that their right-wing newspapers now feel free to publish articles calling Nicola Sturgeon a "traitor" who deserves to be beheaded for sticking to her manifesto commitment to offer Scotland another referendum if they face being dragged out of the EU against their will.
The obnoxiousness and bigotry in the video clip are very easy to see, but the ignorance is perhaps the most obvious thing of all. Scotland isn't ruled by "a little tiny fucking country like Belgium", that's such an ignorant misrepresentation of the nature of the EU it's ridiculous. The problem for Scotland is that they are controlled by Westminster, and they face being dragged out of the EU, and out of the Single Market by a bunch of rabidly right-wing English Tories. Scotland is being slow-marched towards a catastrophic nuclear Brexit by Theresa May and the Tories despite the fact that Scotland voted heavily against Brexit. The furious ranting of the Little Englander in the video isn't actually all that much different from Theresa May's arrogant attitude that the Scottish people should just do as they're damned well told by the English.
The problem for Scotland isn't that they're ruled over by Belgium (?!), it's that the Tories have rigged Westminster so that Scottish MPs can't influence English issues, but English MPs can, and do, vote on Scottish issues!
What better propaganda for independence is there than a bunch of furious right-wing English people expressing how much they hate Scotland, and telling the Scottish people that they should just bow down and do as they're told by their English lords and masters?
If Scotland does vote for independence they can free themselves from the malign and corrupting influence of English Tories, and then they can decide their own future as a nation instead of having it decided for them by Theresa May and a load of English Tory toffs in Westminster. And if in the process of breaking away from Westminster control they upset furious hate-filled Little Englanders like the guy in the video, then that's clearly an added bonus isn't it?

The official Tory reaction to Sturgeon's announcement was astoundingly brass-necked. The party that delivered an unbelievably rushed, astoundingly dishonest and incredibly divisive EU referendum campaign has the absolute gall to try to claim that a Scottish independence referendum shouldn't happen because it would be "divisive".
The Tories won't be able to prevent the Scottish Parliament from approving an independence referendum because the SNP and the pro-independence Scottish Greens have a clear majority, so if the Westminster Tories block an official referendum, it'll clearly and undeniably be a bunch of English Tories (divisively) blocking the will of the Scottish parliament, which would be the greatest gift possible to the independence movement as they launch an advisory referendum (like the Brexit one was) and campaign with "English Tories are trying to silence Scotland and dictate our future: Vote Yes".
However brass-necked the Tory stance is, Scottish Labour seem to want to match it with pure strategic ineptitude.
Given that Scottish Labour have lost so much already by imitating the Tories so cravenly, you would have thought they'd do everything in their power to make sure they differentiate their message this time around, but no ... The Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale tweeted exactly the same rhetoric as the Westminster Tories about another Scottish independence referendum being divisive.
Dugdale's Tweet was met with an absolute hail of condemnation, but Scottish Labour clearly aren't listening. They're stuck in a self-righteous bubble of delusion that they're absolutely right, and the Scottish electorate are a bunch of idiots for rejecting them.
If they stick with their failing tactic of imitating the Tories then they'll simply hasten their (already rapid) decline into political oblivion.

Boris Johnson (who Theresa May somehow saw fit to appoint as our nation's top diplomat) was so perturbed by the icy continental reaction to the threat-based Tory negotiating tactics that he decided to blabber out another one of his insulting Second World War analogies. If the Europeans don't cave in and give the Tories the ridiculous corporate wish list they've drawn up, then they'd be like WWII prison camp guards administering a savage beating to the plucky lovable Brits!
The really sad thing about this is that millions of people actually buy into this drivel. Millions of people actually seem to think that ridiculous threats and crude insults are the key characteristics of a good negotiating strategy!
A post-speech YouGov poll found that an astonishing 47% of British people actually have confidence in Theresa May's negotiating skills and an even more incredible 55% of us actually believe that Theresa May's "cave in and give us our corporate wishlist or we're going to turn our country into a vast corporate tax haven" threat-based negotiating stance will be "good for Britain"!
It really is enough to drive any rational person to despair that our Brexit negotiation team have revealed that they have the diplomatic skills of a toddler having a tantrum; even worse is that it took them six tedious months to come up with such an embarrassingly lame "negotiating strategy"; and what's worst of all is that a majority of British people actually seem to believe that this absurd display of foot-stamping tantrums, ridiculous threats and crude insults is actually going to be good for Britain in the long-run!
