"Politics is Broken" and guess what? Only they can save us!

The 11 (and counting) squatter MPs are all pushing this populist "politics is broken" trope as hard as they can, and positioning themselves as the heroic saviours.

In this article I'm going to look at the absolute chaos this "politics is broken" trope has already unleashed in three other major economies, before looking at the squatter MPs and their Independent Group (AKA 'Tinge') in more detail.

What I'm not going to do is argue that politics isn't broken. Britain wouldn't be in this farcical Brexit shit-show if the political establishment class hadn't put us here, and anti-vaxxers, grifters, and smarmy charlatans would never have got their hands on the levers of power in Italy, the United States, and France had their political systems not been flawed enough to allow them to either.

The point is that just because someone is repeatedly saying "politics is broken" doesn't mean you have to unquestioningly accept the way they position themselves as the only possible saviours.

Italy

The Five Star Movement is a populist anti-politics political party founded in 2009 by the stand-up comedian and polemicist Beppe Grillo.

This party has used the big tent political strategy to build a disparate coalition of all kinds of people with eurosceptics, anti-globalists, direct democracy advocates, and anti-vaxxers making up several of their core demographics.

Initially attractive to people on the left for their anti-establishment, environmentalist, and direct democracy advocacy, it soon became clear that this party was shifting rapidly towards the extreme-right.

This rightwards shift became absolutely indisputable when the 5 Star MEPs in the European Parliament joined Nigel Farage's rag-tag band of far-right eurosceptics in 2014, but unfortunately, as in Britain, Italians pay very little attention to the internal machinations of the European Parliament, so this collusion with far-right fanatics and outright fascists went virtually unnoticed.

The March 2018 Italian General Election was the huge M5S breakthrough moment, they won the most votes and landed enough seats to make them kingmakers in the Italian parliament. In May 2018 they created a coalition with the fascist party Lega Nord bringing fascism back to the Italian government for the first time in decades.

Since then the popularity of Five Star has waned (although they're still extremely popular with the anti-vaxxer movement for the radical anti-science policies they've enacted) while the fascists they enabled into power have soared in popularity from the 3rd most popular party to by far the most popular.

So the lesson from Italy is clear: Vote for the "politics is broken" populists and get anti-vaxxers and fascism.

United States

I'm pretty sure I don't need to explain all that much about the last few years in US politics.

Donald Trump used "politics is Broken" style populism to position himself as the ideological saviour who was going to "drain the swamp" and "bring the jobs back" to places like the rust belt.

People believed him, he got elected, he immediately filled the top administration jobs with more Wall Street bankers, corporate stooges, and inherited wealth billionaires than any government in US history, then he set about attacking the health care and social security systems, and then he implemented the biggest tax handout for the mega-rich ever.

Nothing for the little people who voted him into power, and a massive windfall for his mega-rich mates. Who would have thought such a thing could happen when you elect billionaire from the international speculator class as your President?

So the lesson from the United States is clear: Vote for the "politics is broken" populists and get Trumpism.

France

The situation in France is by far the most analogous to what's currently happening in Britain.

Emmanuel Macron was a right-wing neoliberal who embedded himself within the centre-left socialist party.

As minister of economy and finance in the socialist government he set about implementing spectacularly unpopular labour reforms that triggered mass protests and trashed the government's popularity.

After destroying the socialist government from within he walked away to set up a shiny new "centrist" party called En Marche which used the whole "politics is broken" and "we are the saviours" schtick to great effect.

What better way to sell neoliberalism to the public than point out all of the failings of neoliberalism (several of which you were personally involved with), then present yourself as the shiny new alternative?

The problem of course is that when you promise people change, but then deliver more of the same but even worse in the form of massive tax cuts for corporations and the mega-rich, fuel price increases loaded on the poor, even more ideological attacks on labour rights, deeply unpopular education reforms, and significantly collapsing living standards - people tend to get angry.

And when the French get angry they don't just unthinkingly vote in favour of a massive act of national self-harm and then grovellingly re-elect the bastards who trashed their living standards in the first place like us Brits do. They revolt, they protest, they riot.

France has been wracked by 14 consecutive weeks of mass protests and Macron has gone from winning the Presidency and an absolute landslide in the French parliament, to being the most unpopular President in French history with an approval rating only slightly better than cancer.

The most incredible thing about it is that he's managed to nose-dive his Presidency and reduce his nation to mass protests, riots, division, police brutality, and chaos in significantly less than two years!

So the lesson from France is clear: Vote for the "politics is broken" populists and get absolute bloody chaos.

Britain

So the Independent Group ('Tinge') parliamentary squatters are pushing the exact same rhetoric as these other populist movements. "Politics is broken", and guess what? Only they can save us!

The problem of course is that every single one of them is an establishment insider to the core, with several of them being particularly to blame for the current shit-show.

Before the EU referendum Chuka Umunna added fuel to the anti-EU bonfire by fulminating against Freedom of Movement and scapegoating European immigrants. Now he actually expects us to believe him when he positions himself as the glorious saviour to the Brexit mess that he actually helped to create by actively turning Labour Party members against free movement!

Mike Gapes, Joan Ryan, and Ann Coffey are all responsible for the thing that created the biggest ever rift in trust between British people and the Westminster political establishment class. Despite the biggest public protests in British history in 2003, these people voted in favour of the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq on the grounds of terrifying Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Hundreds of thousands died, millions were displaced, these terrifying WMDs were never found because they didn't exist, and Iraq was turned into a lawless terrorism breeding ground that eventually gave birth to the monstrosity of ISIS.

To make matters even worse these warmongers all repeatedly voted against holding an inquiry into their disastrous invasion and occupation of Iraq, and all hate Jeremy Corbyn on the basis that he was absolutely right that Iraq was going to be a disaster, and because they simply can't bear to admit that they have the blood of hundreds of thousands of people on their hands.

Anna Soubry is one of the three Tories to have joined the squatters citing her opposition to Brexit as a factor in her decision, but incredibly she actually voted in favour of Theresa May's hard-right EU Withdrawal Act in January 2018 while Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour front bench opposed it! Some brave and principled Brexit saviour eh?

Perhaps the most telling thing of all is that all 11 of the squatter MPs are either austerity-enforcers who actually voted in favour of the ruinous Tory austerity dogma that trashed British living standards and created the massive wave of public anger that drove Brexit narrowly over the winning line, or they're austerity abstainers from the right-wing fringe of the Labour Party who actually turned a blind eye to the suffering of millions of their fellow citizens to sit on their hands as the Tories voted though the biggest package of social security cuts in British history in 2015.

Anyone who imagines that this opportunistic group of pro-austerity fanatics, ideological contortionists, self-serving opportunists, and unrepentant warmongers from deep within the ranks of the political establishment class is going to fix our "broken politics" and lead a glorious British revival is clearly working at the same extraordinary level of delusion as those who voted in favour of Brexit thinking a Tory administered abandonment of the EU would immediately turn the UK into the land of milk and honey for all.

But the worrying thing is that there is already a lot of support for this fake political party (established as a private company in order to evade scrutiny of their financial affairs) with no policies, no members, no internal democracy, no leader, no respect for the people in their constituencies, and no disciplinary procedures for bigoted MPs who spout racist nonsense on the TV!

It's looking a lot like the shiny but empty promise of Macronism all over again, built by another bunch of hopeless charlatans desperately trying to keep orthodox neoliberalism alive by rebranding it as a wonderful new form of 'centrism' that will somehow miraculously "fix our broken politics".

Unfortunately this blatant con trick has been shown to work effectively in other major economies with predictably disastrous results, so only the complacent would imagine that it couldn't possibly work here too.

Why do liberals and 'centrists' so often end up supporting the extreme-right?

First things first, this article is not intended as a defence of the Maduro government in Venezuela. Anyone who attempts to present it in such a way is simply lying in a desperate attempt to discredit what they don't like reading, and don't want other people to read.

Whether you like Nicolás Maduro or not, whether you understand the multitude of internal and external factors that have created the current situation in Venezuela or not, whether you even know anything much at all about the Venezuelan political system or not, there's one thing that's undeniable: Anyone who sides with a guy who appoints himself President of a country without standing in a Presidential election is displaying utter contempt for the concept of democracy.

This is exactly what's happened in Venezuela with Juan Guaidó appointing himself President of the country despite the fact he didn't even stand in the 2018 Presidential election, let alone win it.

Thus Venezuela now has two Presidents. One who won the 2018 Presidential election and the other who didn't even participate in it and simply appointed himself because he didn't like the outcome of the ballot he didn't even contest.

The United States immediately backed this anti-democratic coup and recognised the self-appointed coup-President, just like they rushed in to back the spectacularly failed 2002 coup in the country too.

Back in 2002 the US were the only country to recognise the coup leader Pedro Carmona as President of Venezuela before the coup rapidly collapsed and Hugo Chávez returned to power within two days.

The international reaction to this 2019 coup is very different, with numerous other countries rushing to throw their support behind this unelected self-appointed fake President.

The UK foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has announced that the human rights defying Tory government support the unelected coup-President.

Another leader to have immediately thrown their support behind the coup-President is the recently elected Brazilian fascist Jair Bolsonaro.

Several other hard-right governments in Latin America have backed the unelected coup-President, including Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Paraguay.

None of this is remotely surprising given Britain's increasingly pathetic subservience to US foreign policy, and the massive historic divide in Latin America between US-backed right wing governments and US-opposed left-wing governments that has existed since the United States began their outrageous campaign of toppling left-leaning Latin American governments in the region decades ago.

What's ostensibly a lot more surprising is the way European liberals and self-declared centrists have been rushing to support the US-backed "regime change" that's happening in Venezuela.

Take the leader of the Liberal grouping in the European Parliament Guy Verhofstadt. His reaction to the coup attempt has been to personally recognise the self-appointed coup-President, lie that he's elected when he didn't even stand in the 2018 Presidential election, and then call for the EU to join Trump and Bolsonaro in recognising this coup leader as the legitimate President!

The very same guy who was furiously attacking Donald Trump as an "autocrat" and "a threat to Europe" back in 2017 is now wilfully sitting on Trump's knee like a yapping imperialist poodle!

Another Liberal to jump on the extraordinary 'this is a good coup' bandwagon is the centrists' darling Emmanuel Macron, who even had the gall to praise the bravery of the anti-government protesters in Venezuela as the French state brutally attacks and systematically represses the gilets jaunes protests against his own government!

Everyone knows that this US-backed coup is all about access to Venezuela's oil reserves (the biggest in the world) because Donald Trump's already publicly declared that US interventionism should be used to steal the natural resources of other nations.

It's extraordinary that so many trendy liberals and self-declared centrists are openly supporting this US imperialist "regime change" agenda while Trump's people openly talk about the prospect of making the already desperate situation even worse by launching military action in Venezuela.

They can't pretend to not understand what the motivation actually is after Trump's spelled it out for them so clearly. And it's especially alarming given the way that these people really should have learned all about the appalling consequences of imperialist "regime change" agendas after the Iraq invasion in 2003, and the destruction of Libya in 2011.

Both of these countries have been reduced to lawless terrorism breeding grounds with humanitarian conditions far worse than they ever were under the authoritarian governments of Hussain and Gadaffi.

Of course it's understandable that European liberals are no great fans of Maduro (neither am I, and I'm a leftie), but what does it tell you about their political principles when they're clamouring to align themselves with Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro to support a brazenly anti-democratic coup?
Even if you believe the 2018 Presidential election in Venezuela was rigged, supporting a self-appointed coup-President who didn't even stand in the election is utterly nonsensical from a democratic point of view.

And what does it tell you about their bone-headed refusal to learn the lessons of history when they wilfully ignore the unspeakable levels of death, destruction, and suffering that imperialist "regime change" policies have caused in Iraq and Syria to support the exact same imperialist agenda in Venezuela, only this time orchestrated by an even more unstable, profit-driven, and fanatically right-wing US President than George W. Bush was?

It's beyond question that anyone supporting the self-appointed and unelected fake-President Guaidó is siding with extreme-right ideologues like Trump and Bolsonaro, refusing to learn the lessons of history about the horrific consequences of imperialist "regime change" policies, and displaying their absolute contempt for the concept of democracy.

One of the most extraordinary things is that many of these liberals and centrists pledging support for the Venezuelan coup were the ones crying the loudest when Donald Trump won the US Presidential election, and bitterly decrying the rise of far-right populism when Bolsonaro won the Brazilian Presidential election in October 2018.

But scroll forward just a few months and these same trendy liberals and self-declared centrists are now wilfully stepping in line with the extreme-right demagogues they decried when they won power to actively support the transparently anti-democratic coup they've orchestrated in Venezuela.

This farce in Venezuela is far from the first time that liberals have ended up supporting and enabling extreme-right demagogues. We can delve into history to look at the way the liberal German establishment wilfully handed power the Nazis in 1933 by making Adolf Hitler Chancellor, or we can look to current day Italy to see how the trendy liberal MS5 party have enabled the fascist Lega Nord into power by joining them in a coalition government.

The fact is that given the choice between moving leftwards towards socialism, and rightwards towards fascism, an awful lot of self-declared centrists and trendy liberals will chose the fascist option because they understand that fascism goes hand-in-hand with corporatism meaning that their financial interests will be protected.

As long as corporations and their personal financial interests are protected, a lot of liberals and self-declared centrists are willing to overlook the obvious dangers of enabling the extreme-right into power, or siding with the extreme-right axis when it comes to global politics.

This centrist willingness to overlook the dangers of fascism most often comes from the position of extreme privilege.

Most wealthy, white, westerners know they have the least to fear from fascism (u
nless they have leftist political sympathies) because it's always the political left, minorities, the vulnerable, and people in the developing world who bear the brunt of the persecution and suffering under extreme-right rule.

Of course people should be able to recognise the thin end of a wedge, and they should be aware of Martin Niemöller's warning about the danger of escalating fascism (see picture), but in reality these coddled liberals and centrists keep making the same mistakes over and again.

Liberals and centrists will have tantrums for a while when fanatical right-wing ideologues like Trump or Bolsonaro are elected because they hate not having things their own way, and because deep in their hearts they know the extreme-right is wrong, but when push comes to shove they repeatedly fall into line and quickly start supporting them.

The gleeful reaction of so many self-declared centrists and trendy liberals to the anti-democratic US-backed imperialist coup in Venezuela is yet another perfect illustration of their outrageous tendency to wilfully align with and support the extreme-right thanks to the shared belief in corporatism.

Italy's governing Five Star party dismissed concerns that the Morandi Bridge could collapse as a fairy story

At least 39 people were killed when the Morandi Bridge in Genoa collapsed, sending 20 cars and three HGV's falling 45 metres to the ground, and crushing everything below under vast mounds of concrete.

The initial response of the Italian government was quite extraordinary. The Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the fascist Northern League party Matteo Salvini actually attempted to deflect blame for the tragedy onto the EU, and then set about deliberately deflecting attention onto Mediterranean refugees.

Salvini's desperate attempt to blame the EU for 'budget restraints' that supposedly prevented Italy from repairing or replacing the bridge is absolutely ridiculous.

Of course the EU has imposed ruinous austerity measures on countries like Italy, Greece, and Spain, but nobody in the EU has ever vetoed a bridge repair budget, (in fact the EU has distributed vast amounts of money for public infrastructure projects like road upgrades).

Then came the revelation that Salvini's Five Star coalition partners actually opposed repair work to the bridge, and publicly dismissed concerns that it could collapse as a children's fairy story ('favoletta') in 2013.

The Five Star party hastily removed the offending article from their website once people began looking at it, but it still exists in archive form as you can see here.

Only the very worst of Internet illiterates imagine that you can simply make a story go away by deleting the page in question, but this IT illiteracy is something that the Five Star movements have in common with their UKIP allies in the European Parliament, who also have a habit of deleting incriminating web pages once people come across them.

So while one coalition partner gratuitously blames the EU for the disaster, the other coalition party actually led the campaign to prevent repairs to the bridge and patronisingly dismissed concerns that a tragedy like this could happen as a fairy story!

One might hope that Italian people would wake up to the folly of electing a bunch of extreme-right populists and outright fascists to lead their country. But it'll probably take more than a bridge collapse followed by a bunch of blame-shifting lies and evidence deleting evasions to turn public opinion.

I mean just look at how quickly the Grenfell Tower tragedy was lobbed down the collective memory hole after the Tory council left 72 people to burn to death in an absolute firetrap.

If the Tories can simply walk away from an outrage like that after most of the public forget about the sheer horror of it, no doubt Italy's far-right coalition will walk away from this horrific bridge collapse too once the news shifts onto something else.

"Taking back control" by handing control of HS2 to one of three foreign governments

Of all of the Brexit rhetoric the "taking back control" propaganda trope was surely the most powerfully persuasive, but a look at what the Tory government have in store for the HS2 rail project just goes to show how shockingly misleading "taking back control" actually was.

The Tories are planning to spend £56 billion on building the HS2 high speed rail link between London, Birmingham, and the north, but instead of run it ourselves they're immediately going to hand the whole lot over to a rail franchise to run the trains and reap the profits!

The three bidders to run HS2 have been announced and all three are fully, or partially owned by the state rail companies of other countries.

Bidder 1: The Italian state railway + First Group
Bidder 2: The French state railway + Stagecoach & Virgin
Bidder 3: The state owned Hong Kong subway operator and the Chinese Guangshen Railway
Tory privatisation mania

"Why can't Britain run its own high speed railways since it was British cash that built it?" you may well ask, and the answer is that Tory privatisation mania in the 1990s has destroyed the British railway industry, and their ideological hatred of Britain means they will never willingly allow Britain to run its own rail services.

In the 1970s and '80s British Rail led the world in developing high speed rail technology like the tilting train, but Tory under-investment in the 1980s and privatisation mania in the 1990s completely ruined the British train building industry.

A whopping 1,064 days without a single new train order after privatisation wiped out the train builders and left the nation that invented rail travel dependent upon the Italians to supply us the same kind of tilting trains that we were pioneering in the '70s and '80s.

As a result of Tory privatisation mania 74% of UK rail franchises have now fallen into the hands of foreign state rail companies, that use British commuters and lucrative subsidies from the British government as cash cows to fund improvements to their own rail networks back home.

The Tories have enforced an insane system where the only country that is banned from bidding to run UK rail franchises is the UK!

The Tory party are such economic traitors that they're bitterly opposed to Britain running its own rail services, but happy as Larry for the governments of other countries to step in and milk huge profits out of British rail infrastructure!

Not just rail

The same sorry state of affairs exists with our nuclear industry which the Tories flogged off in 1995. By 2009 the private owners of Britain's nuclear expertise realised there was more cash to be made by flogging the whole lot off to the French government than continuing to run it themselves, so that's what they did.

Britain's nuclear expertise now belongs to France, and that's why the Tories ended up bribing France and China into building us a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C rather than building our own. We simply can't build our own because the Tories sold off our ability to do that back in 1995, just like they wrecked our rail expertise in 1994.

"Taking back control" - my arse

The "taking back control" narrative is absurd drivel when the reality is that the Tories flogged off our ability to control our own infrastructure and services during the privatisation mania of the 1990s, so now we're dependent on foreign governments to do the things the economically treasonous Tory party are ideologically opposed to Britain doing for herself.

So next time you hear some delusional Tory Brexiter banging on about sovereignty and "taking back control" just ask them whether they want the oh-so patriotic Tories to hand "control" of HS2 to the government of France, Italy or China and see what their response is ...

Who is Nigel Farage's new Polish mate?

We all had a good laugh when it was reported that UKIP's so-called European Freedom and Direct Democracy group had collapsed after the withdrawal of the Latvian MEP Iveta Grigule, who quit the group within six months of joining it, meaning that they had representation from fewer than the seven EU nations necessary to form an official group and claim £millions in subsidies from the EU.

I'm pretty sure anyone but the most hardcore of UKIP tribalists must have thought "good job too ... what on earth is an anti-EU party doing gobbling up subsidies from the organisation they supposedly oppose anyway?"

Unfortunately Farage was quick to find a makeweight MEP from elsewhere to fill out his group again in order to requalify them to continue riding the EU funding gravy train. The MEP he found was The Polish MEP Robert Iwaszkiewicz, who comes from a political party so fanatically right-wing that even the French Front National wanted absolutely nothing to do with them!

In this article I'm going to take a closer look at the ragtag bunches of parties that Nigel Farage builds around UKIP in order to gobble up EU subsidies, and then go on to look at UKIP's new Polish friend and the party that he represents.

The European Freedom and Democracy group (2009-2014)

If you know anything much at all about European politics, it is blindingly obvious that EFDD (and the predecessor group EFD) are just haphazard groups of parties, with virtually nothing in common apart from the fact that without being part of such groups, UKIP would be short of the multinational alliance necessary in order to claim £millions in party subsidies from the EU.

The fact that UKIP's 2009-2014 group was pretty much a random jumble of parties can be seen by looking at the schitzophrenic voting record of the EFD group. One vote that is of particular interest to me is the May 2013 vote on whether the EU should proceed with negotiating the TTIP Corporate Power Grab, which is a proposed "trade deal" designed to completely over-write the democratic and judicial systems of signature states with pro-corporate legiaslation.

Given their habit of harping on endlessly about British sovereignty, one would have expected UKIP and their EFD group to vote against TTIP, however a look at the voting record reveals that only one UKIP MEP even bothered to vote, and he voted in favour of it, along with the majority of the EFD group. In fact the ex-Tory Roger Helmer joined 17 other EFD MEPs in voting in favour of TTIP, whilst only two MEPs in the whole group rebelled and voted against it.

It's quite extraordinary that UKIP are now pretending to be opposed to TTIP, even though Roger Helmer, and the majority of their political group voted in favour of it last time it came before the European Parliament, and their economics spokesperson William "Dartmouth" Legge continues speaking out in favour of it.
The European Freedom and Direct Democracy group (2014-)

The composition of UKIP's group has changed dramatically since the 2014 European Elections. Out went the Italian neo-fascists Legia Nord and in came Beppe Grillo's populist Five Star Movement protest party in their place. The neo-fascist True Finns party also departed, as did the Calvinist Dutch political party SGP and the radical right-wing Greek Popular Orthodox Rally. In fact the only survivors other than UKIP from the previous incarnation are the two MEPs from the Lithuanian Order and Justice party. To reflect this change the group name was altered to include the word "Direct".

Within UKIP's reconstituted European gang, only one other party provides more than two MEPs, and that is Beppe Grillo's Five Star Movement (MS5) which provides 17, to UKIP's 24, the other five contribute only seven MEPs between them.

The Five Star Movement and UKIP make extremely odd bedfellows. The only similarities seem to be that they are both Eurosceptic parties, and that they both have a charismatic populist as their leaders.

There are large policy differences between the two parties, not least the MS5 support for gay marriage and gay equality, their commitment to digital democracy and their environmentalist policy platform. A bunch of gay equality enthusiasts and environmentalists look like extremely odd bedfellows to a party riddled with climate change deniers and gay equality opposers.

Perhaps the strongest indicator that MS5 are extremely odd companions for UKIP is that they initially tried to join the left-wing (and strongly anti-TTIP) Green - European Freedom Alliance containing the Green Party, Plaid Cymru and the SNP, but they were rejected.

After being rejected by the Greens MS5 tried to join the ALDE group which contains the one remaining Lib-Dem MEP, but they were rejected by them too.

Only after being rejected by the long-established Green and Liberal Democrat parliamentary groups did MS5 settle for joining Nigel Farage's ragtag bunch.

Another really confusing aspect to MS5's participation in UKIP's EFDD group is their commitment to preventing politics from becoming a way to make money and a career choice, which manifests through their rejection of publicly allocated funds to their party. What a party with such a commitment to not scamming expenses and making a career out of politics is doing propping up a European group which pretty much only exists to ensure that UKIP receive £millions in subsidies from the EU is anybodies guess.

Who is Nigel Farage's new Polish mate?

The new addition to UKIP's disparate bunch of Euro oddballs is the Polish MEP
Robert Iwaszkiewicz who has been given special dispensation from his KNP party to join the UKIP group.
KNP is an extreme-right group led by Janusz Korwin-Mikke, who is one of the most "outspoken" MEPs in Europe, who has a habit of doing things like denying the holocaust, saying that women shouldn't be allowed to vote and referring to black Americans as "niggers".

Here are some quotes from the leader of the Polish party that has saved UKIP's lucrative European subsidies by lending them one of his MEPs.

"Women are dumber than men and should not be allowed to vote"
"Evolution has ensured that women are not too intelligent"
"The general public should not see the disabled on television" (an objection to the 2012 Summer Paralympics)
"Democracy is the stupidest form of government ever conceived"
"Gays are a gang of louts imported from abroad"
"We must destroy the minimum wage and we must destroy the power of trade unions" (from this speech in which he refered to black Americans as "niggers")
As for the man himself, UKIP's new ally Robert Iwaszkiewicz has praised Adolf Hitler for his tax policies and defended domestic violence. Here are a couple of quotes:
"If taxes were lower in Hitler's time, and now they're higher, what's wrong with wanting to say so?"
"[wife beating can] help bring many wives back down to earth"

It's absolutely clear that UKIP is now reliant upon a man from a very distasteful extreme-right bunch of Holocaust deniers in order to keep their taxpayer funded subsidies rolling in.

Ukipper reactions

It's no surprise at all that the overwhelming reaction of Ukippers to all of this has been to jump straight into self-pitying conspiracy theory mode, because that was precisely the mentality of their leader Nigel Farage when the Latvian MEP Iveta Grigule left the EFDD group.

Instead of contemplating the idea that she might have left because EFDD is an incoherent group made up of totalitarians, libertarians, anti-gay, pro-gay, environmentalists, climate change deniers, extreme right-wingers and wannabe-greens, to Farage and his followers it was clearly the result of some grand conspiracy orchestrated by Martin Schultz and a cabal of evil Euro-federalists.

The Ukipper reaction to the revelation that their new Polish friend comes from a disgusting and misogynistic extreme-right party is similar. You only have to read any article exposing KNP for what they are, to see a bunch of Ukippers complaining that the quotes have been "taken out of context"; that they were "only jokes"; that they were "deliberately mistranslated"; and that it's all some big conspiracy against the brave UKIP freedom fighters.

This tendency to jump straight into conspiracy theory mode derives from the tribalist hero narratives of the UKIP campaign. It's impossible for the tribalist Ukipper to see that UKIP has ever done anything wrong, because they are by definition the heroes of the story, meaning the narrative would be rendered incoherent if the problems they encounter are of their own making, rather than the result of the meddling of some arch-villain (in this case Martin Schultz, but in other cases the Lib-Lab-Cons, the media, the gays, the environmentalists, the PC brigade ...).

Conclusion

It's absolutely no surprise to anyone who follows European politics that Nigel Farage has once again hopped into bed with terrible nutters from the extreme-right fringe in order to keep UKIP's ticket to ride the EU gravy train of party funding. In the last European Parliament he cavorted with Italian neo-fascists who openly declared that the mass murderer Anders Brevik had "excellent ideas" that were "in defence of Western civilisation", and already in the new parliament he's been forced to defend the outrageous history of his Swedish Democrat allies, which grew out of the Nordic Nazi Party.

The fact that UKIP are up to their old tricks of hanging about with the dregs of the extreme-right fringe in order to secure more taxpayer funding for their party is not at all surprising. What is much more interesting is the fact that the Italian progressives MS5 continue to prop this group up. What on earth are a bunch of pro-equality, environmentalist, digital democracy enthusiast, wannabe Greens doing propping up this increasingly vile extreme-right coalition?

Perhaps someone who speaks Italian could ask the leader of MS5 Beppe Grillo what he thinks he is achieving by associating himself and his party with right-wing opportunists like Nigel Farage, and extreme-right fanatics like
Robert Iwaszkiewicz and the Sweden Democrats?

12 Things you should know about the 2014 European elections

In this article I'm going to highlight 12 talking points from the 2014 European elections. They're not really just 12 things, but lots and lots of different things organised under 12 subheadings.

The UKIP earthquake actually happened on Sunday

In their desperation for UKIP to win and create a big news story, the mainstream press declared the UKIP local election results an "earthquake" and a "triumph" even though the UKIP share of the local election vote actually fell dramatically from last year. UKIP won far fewer new council seats than Labour (who apparently were the big losers despite winning more than half of the seats on offer); they failed to gain control of a single council; and they finished with far fewer council seats than even the politically toxic Lib-Dems.

The mainstream press actually shot themselves in the foot on the Thursday night, because the UKIP "earthquake" headlines would have been far more profound had they saved them for Sunday night and Monday Morning, after it had become clear that UKIP had won the most votes in the European ballot and created a genuine shock to the system, rather than just picking up a few council seats scattered all across the country.

The press should have saved their superlatives for Sunday night, because that is when UKIP made history by winning the European ballot. It is the first time in living memory that a UK level election has been won by anyone other than Labour and the Tories, and it is the first time in the history of the Conservative party that they have failed to finish in the top two.

UKIP received the most votes by a significant margin, they won the most seats overall, they increased their share of the vote in every single region and they even took an MEP in Scotland, which is quite incredible given that their former party leader in Scotland recently insulted the Scottish people by describing them as "subsidy junkies" (this is especially insulting because every Scot with a Brain in his head should know that the UK takes far more out of Scotland than it gives back in "subsidies").

The only ray of hope from this UKIP "earthquake" can be found in the large discrepancy between UKIP local election vote and their vote in the European ballot. This discrepancy suggests that hundreds of thousands of people voted against UKIP in the local elections, but held their noses and voted for them in the European election in order to send a message to the establishment that they want the UK to withdraw from the EU.

Fascism is stalking Europe again

I have criticised UKIP a lot, because I strongly dislike their Uber-Thatcherite economic stance, their immigration fearmongering tactics, their lack of transparency over their policies, and the fact that they are bankrolled by a pack of former Tory party donors, however I've stopped short of ever branding UKIP a "fascist" or "racist" party, because I don't believe that this kind of melodramatic language is useful. They obviously attract a hell of lot of bigoted people, but they do tend to regularly sling the bigots out of the party when they get caught saying homophobic, racist or sexist things (which is a ridiculously common occurrence).

I won't stop short of using this kind of blunt language to criticise the extreme right Front National party in France.

These people, led by the disgusting Le Pen family, are fascists, racists and bigots. In the week before the election (the founder of the party, MEP candidate, and father of the current leader) Jean-Marie Le Pen suggested using the horrific Ebolavirus as a solution to Europe's "immigration problem". This unbelievable statement actually gave his party a boost in the poll ratings!

It is absolutely extraordinary that this bunch of disgusting far-right extremists have won a landslide election victory in a country as big, multicultural and generally centre-left as France. I hope all the non-extremist French people who didn't bother to vote feel thoroughly ashamed of themselves for letting these freakish extremists win the election and make their country look like a laughing stock of backwards, hate-filled nutters.

It's an illustration of how dangerous these Front National extremists are that after it became clear that they had won the European election in which only about a third of French people had bothered to vote, they immediately used this success as their justification to call for the French parliament to be dissolved!

I strongly dislike UKIP, but at least our anti-EU protest party in Britain is just an Uber-Thatcherite Trojan horse, in France the chosen anti-EU protest party are a disgusting bunch of fascists.

The victory for Front National in France wasn't the only example of extreme right parties on the rise. In Austria the neo-Nazi Freedom Party came second, the Hungarian extreme-right nationalist party Jobbik came second, and Geert Wilders extreme-right PVV came second in the Netherlands too. It is also possible to argue that the ruling PP party in Spain has shifted so far to the right that they should now be classified alongside the extreme-right fringe*.

The people of Britain have spoken

Before the election I did my best to use facts and evidence to explain to the public that UKIP is a Thatcherism on Steroids party pretending to be patriots in order to hoover up the anti-EU protest votes, to question their lack of clearly stated policies on several vital issues and to highlight their appalling voting record in Europe - so it was hardly a surprise to find my Another Angry Voice Facebook page filled with gloating Ukipper comments when the result of the European poll was released on Sunday 25th May.

One of these UKIP gloaters was so ignorant of what the election meant that he told me that "the majority of Britain has spoken" as if the majority of the country had gone out and voted for UKIP.

Even if we just count the people who actually bothered to vote, UKIP got 26.6% of the vote, which is nowhere near "the majority". However it's also got to be remembered that only 34% of people actually bothered to turn up to vote at all. UKIP might well have won, but they did so with the votes of just 9% of the eligible electorate. Only a Ukipper could be ignorant enough of how politics actually works to declare a 9% electoral mandate to be a clear "majority".

66% of the electorate didn't even bother to vote in this election, meaning that if the British people have spoken, they didn't say "I love UKIP" they said "I really, really don't give a fuck about this".

Labour did OK but they've only got themselves to blame

This result was hardly a glowing endorsement of the Labour party, but they did manage to significantly increase their share of the vote and win themselves seven extra seats. They now have 20 seats in the European parliament, which is one more than the Tories. This is a good performance when viewed in terms of the traditional Labour-Tory rivalry, given that in 2009 the Tories won twice as many seats as labour (26 to 13).

Even thought this is the best Labour performance in an European ballot for decades, they still finished second, a significant margin behind UKIP, but in my view they've only got themselves to blame for this.

Had Labour given the public the referendum on the EU they so clearly want and deserve, instead of adopting the anti-democratic "we won't let you vote because you'll vote the wrong way" stance, the UKIP thorn could have been drawn years ago.

By refusing to give the people the referendum they want, and furthermore signing up to the Lisbon Treaty without a referendum, Labour essentially turned the European elections into an impromptu referendum on the EU and allowed a more-Tory-than-the-Tories party to piggy back to electoral success on the back it.

The Labour party should never have allowed their commitment to the EU to over-ride the right of the UK public to self-determination, and the price they're going to continue paying for it, is that they've created a Frankenstein's monster of a protest party.

If Labour would have dealt with the EU issue in a democratic way by giving the public a referendum at some point during their 13 years in power, UKIP would have lost their raison d'etre, and perhaps the UK might have experienced the birth and rise of a genuine protest party that is fundamentally opposed to neoliberalism (as in Greece, Italy & Spain) rather than promoting the growth of a terrifying "Thatcherism on Steroids" party which is even more enthusiastic about the destructive ideology of neoliberalism than even the Tory establishment are.

The Liberal Democrat meltdown

The Liberal Democrats went into this election with eleven MEPs, they have come out of it with just one. If we look at the crude numbers, the shocking scale of the Lib-Dem carnage becomes absolutely clear.

  • In the North West their vote fell from 236,000 to 105,000, they lost their MEP and finished 5th behind the Greens.
  • In London their vote fell from 240,00 to 148,000, they lost their MEP and finished fifth behind the Greens.
  • In the North East their vote fell from 104,000 to just 36,000 and they lost their MEP.
  • In the East Midlands their vote fell from 221,000 to 108,000, they lost their MEP and finished behind the Greens.
This carnage was repeated across the country. The Greens jumped above them into fourth place (with a higher % of the vote and three times as many MEPs) and the Scottish National Party (who only stand candidates in one of the twelve regions) beat them too by returning two MEPs.

Nick Clegg has been destroying the party from within for four long years, but it's not him that is suffering, he's got another year of claiming his six figure ministerial salary, swanning around in ministerial cars and enjoying his smug sense of self-importance. The people who are suffering the consequences are outside the Westminster bubble. 10 Lib-Dem MEPs have lost their jobs, over 300 Lib-Dem councilors lost their seats a few days previously and prior to that, countless Lib-Dem activists have encountered a torrent of hostility as they knocked on doors and tried to drum up support for their imploding political party.

Just as Labour should take a long hard look at themselves over the rise of UKIP, the Liberal Democrats need to look at the causes of this massacre. Had the Lib-Dems been shrewd negotiators they could have turned the 2010 hung parliament to their advantage, but they displayed an abject lack of strategic thinking and utter contempt for large chunks of their own core demographics, so they are getting what they deserve.

The fact that the vast majority of the casualties are falling outside of Westminster has insulated Nick Clegg and his allies from the true scale of destruction, so it's conceivable that he might actually even be allowed to carry on driving the party into the ground until the next General Election.

A Thatcherite whitewash in England

For the purposes of this section I'm going to forget for a moment that the Labour party long ago gave up being a social democratic party in favour of presenting a sickly concoction of neoliberalism-lite and pseudo-socialist window dressing. I'm also going to have to forget that the one remaining Lib-Dem MEP represents a party dominated by Orange Book neoliberals too.

The Two devoutly Thatcherite parties absolutely hammered the opposition in every English region apart from London and the North East. Even regions that were devastated by Thatcherism in the 1980s have now returned a majority of devoutly Thatcherite MEPs.

Immesurabe damage was done to the Yorkshire economy when the Thatcher regime decided to abandon British heavy industry and manufacturing in favour of promoting the fantasy of the "post-industrial economy" built around the City of London financial sector.

The mining, steel and heavy manufacturing sectors were all deliberately repressed and left to ruin, leaving areas of Yorkshire blighted by high unemployment, poverty and crime to this day. Despite this appalling legacy of abuse inflicted on Yorkshire and her people by Thatcherites with their heads full of toxic neoliberal dogma, the people of Yorkshire have returned 4 Thatcherite MEPs (1 Tory, 3 UKIP) and just two from all of the other parties combined (2 Labour).

The story is similar in the North West, where Margaret Thatcher's neoliberal experiment hammered the region's industries and infrastructure. Recently declassified documents show how back in the early 1980s Margaret Thatcher wanted to completely abandon the city of Liverpool to post-industrial decay (neoliberal theory says just leave it to market forces, rather than the government intervening to reduce the scale of social devastation), but now the region has returned five Thatcherite MEPs, and just three from the opposition (all of them representing "neoliberalism-lite" New-Labour).

In England the final score is an absolute rout in favour of Thatcherism. Of the 60 MEPs representing English regions, 39 belong to the two overtly Thatcherite parties, whilst only 21 come from the other three parties combined.

If we accept the fact that New Labour and the Liberal Democrats are also adherents of the neoliberal orthodoxy, the score in England is Thatcherism 58 - Alternative parties 3.

Scotland is a very different country

The two devoutly Thatcherite parties routed the opposition in England, but they were minor parties feeding off scraps in Scotland. The Scottish National Party romped to victory ahead of Labour, with the Tories finishing a distant third and UKIP finishing an even more distant fourth.

Despite falling just short of bagging a third MEP at the expense of UKIP, the SNP result is a very good one indeed. They are after all the ruling party in the Scottish Parliament, and they've passed this mid-term election test with flying colours, beating the Tory and UKIP vote combined.

UKIP took just 10.2% of the Scottish vote, and UKIP and the Tories combined only managed to get 27.7% of the vote between them. Meanwhile in England the two Tory parties took significantly more than 50% of the vote between them.

The hugely different voting patterns between Scotland and England are demonstrated by the fact that the Tories and UKIP bagged 65% of the seats available in England, but in Scotland they were quite lucky to even sneak away with 33% of the seats.

It seems that four years of the most right-wing government in living memory hasn't been enough to ward the English away from voting for Thatcherite parties, and if I was a resident of Scotland, I'd much rather brave the uncertainty of independence and self-determination, than risk facing a Tory-UKIP coalition ruling over Scotland from down in London.

This resounding victory for Thatcherism south of the border should be a dire warning of what could be to come if the Scottish electorate refuse to take their opportunity to end London rule in September 2014. If the Scottish people dislike being ruled over by a London based Tory & Lib-Dem coalition they didn't vote for, they're going to be sick as hell if they end up with a Tory-UKIP government in 2015.

The North East

The mainstream press will no doubt harp on about how UKIP were soundly beaten in London, but one other region of England comprehensively rejected UKIP too. The North East is by far the smallest electoral region in England, returning just three MEPs, and the people of the North East returned two Labour party MEPs and one for UKIP.

I'm particularly pleased about this result for two reasons. I grew up at the very top end of North Yorkshire, which is actually far closer to Middlersbrough, Sunderland and Newcastle than it is to the big Yorkshire cities of Leeds and Sheffield. This means I (mis)spent a lot of my youth in County Durham and the North-East, and I feel almost as much a North-Easterner as a Yorkshireman as a consequence. It gives me a sense of pride that this small region - the one that has been hit hardest of all by 35 years of neoliberal ideology - hasn't  succumbed to the "blame the immigrants", "blame the EU", "blame multiculturalism" narratives that convinced the rest of the country to elect Thatcherism on steroids.

The other reason I'm pleased for the North East is that the second name on the Labour party list was Judith Kirton-Darling, someone I knew quite well during my childhood and teenage years. She is someone I've always had a great deal of admiration for, she is a decent and honest individual, and just the right kind of person to do what politicians should and serve the people who elected them, rather than their own self-interest. I'm sure that Judith will do everything in her power to drag the Labour party back towards the left, and back onto the course of actively promoting social justice. On a night of bitter disappointment for the progressive left, seeing that Judith had won a seat was perhaps the only genuine moment of delight for me.

The Green flop

The Green party presented a decent manifesto full of interesting and progressive polices, and they were hoping to cash in on all of the protest voters fleeing from the Liberal Democrat train wreck, but they didn't do anywhere near as well as they should have done.

On the positive side they increased their number of MEPs from 2 to 3 and finished as the fourth party thanks to the astonishing collapse in Lib-Dem support, however their share of the vote flat-lined in most of the regions, and the Scottish Greens fell some way short of beating UKIP to the sixth seat in Scotland.

In my view the explanation for this flop was the fact that Caroline Lucas stepped down as party leader in order to concentrate on her job as MP for Brighton (in which she has done a fantastic job). Her replacement Natalie Bennett just doesn't have the charisma or infectious enthusiasm that Caroline Lucas has, and I think that's she is putting a lot of people off voting for the party.

It seems harsh to say that Natalie Bennett has been a failure after such a short time in the job, but the numbers speak for themselves. The Green party should have been picking up protest votes from the Lib-Dems in regions where the Lib-Dem vote imploded, but they flat-lined, even falling back a bit in several regions. They didn't finish ahead of the Lib-Dems by their own virtues, but rather by the fact that the Lib-Dems nosedived past them.

The Green party needs a strong charismatic leader to reach out to the public (and they also need to do something drastic with their social media strategy). Natalie Bennett should seriously consider stepping down for the good of the party after this disappointing flop.

At least some people in Europe are awake

Of the 73 UK seats in the European parliament, only seven will be occupied by politicians that belong to parties that can be seen as anything resembling an alternative to ideological neoliberalism (3 Green, 2 SNP, 1 Plaid Cymru and 1 Sinn Fein). It is quite remarkable that the protest party that has emerged in the UK is even more devoted to the Thatcherite ideology of neoliberalism than the three Westminster establishment parties that have been enforcing this destructive right-wing economic ideology for 35 long years.

Elsewhere on the continent the public aren't quite as politically illiterate as the English (who voted heavily in favour of UKIP when taken as a whole, when the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish didn't), many of whom are so gullible that they've let the right-wing press convince them that the EU is a communist organisation rather than the neoliberal shitshop it actually is**.

The most high profile alternative party is the anti-neoliberal coalition Syriza in Greece, who have gone from being a motley bunch of "lefties" that were the 5th party in Greece with just 1 MEP in 2009, rose to become the official opposition in the Greek parliament in 2012, and now they've romped home in first place in the European election to bag six MEPs.

The resistance to the neoliberal orthodoxy also showed in Spain, where the two traditional parties saw their share of the vote slump by 40% as a range of smaller parties took lots of votes and seats. The Spanish United Left finished third and took six seats, whilst another, brand new, left-wing party called Podemos (We Can) took 8% of the vote to finish in fourth and bag five seats, despite having been founded in March 2014. To go from nothing to the 4th biggest party in Spain in just over two months is an absolutely incredible achievement.

In Italy the ruling centre-left party scored a resounding victory with over 40% of the vote and bagged 31 seats. Beppe Grillo's 5 Star anti-establishment party romped into second place with 17 seats at their first effort in a European election. These successes left Silvio Berlusconi's party miles behind in third place and the extreme-right Legia Nord down in fourth place with just five seats.

The left and centre-left also performed strongly in Denmark where they took the majority of the seats, the anti-capitalist Die Linke party increased their share of the vote in Germany and the Cypriot Communist party took two of the island's six seats.

The UK public might well be a bunch of Turkeys voting for Christmas, but at least elsewhere on the continent a few people are waking up and voting for genuinely alternative parties. There is actually very little in common between 5 Star in Italy, Syriza in Greece, Podemos in Spain and the Cypriot Communists, but at least they're actually genuine alternatives to the right-wing economic ideology of neoliberalism that has ruled over Europe and most of the individual nation states for the last two decades, rather than a party that believes the only problem is that we haven't had enough neoliberal ideology yet, like UKIP.

A vote of no confidence in the government

The two parties that make up the coalition government went into the European election with 37 MEPs, which were won with 40.3% of the vote in 2009. Back in 2009 the Tories were by far the biggest party with as many MEPs as Labour and UKIP combined, and the Lib-Dems were the fourth party with 11 seats, just two behind Labour and UKIP with 13 each.

After the 2014 vote the two Coalition government parties have lost 17 seats between them, to bring their total down to just 20 of the 73 seats. Their combined share of the vote fell to 30.8%, meaning that the parties have dropped some 1.5 million voters between them.

Considering that 64% of people didn't even bother to vote, and less than a third of those who did bother, actually voted in favour of the two ruling parties, we're left with the astonishing statistic that these two parties only managed to win backing from 11% of the electorate between them.

If we see this election in terms of an approval test for the government, they failed spectacularly, because they didn't even manage to convince one in nine people to come out and vote for them.

There is no other way to view this but as a vote of no confidence in the government.

Bye bye Nick Griffin

After such depressing results for anyone who is opposed to the economic ideology of neoliberalsim that has ruled over us from Westminster and Brussels for decades, it is probably important that I try to end this political autopsy on a high note, which is the annihilation of the BNP.

The North West may have returned a majority of Thatcherite MEPs, however at least they rid themselves of the embarrassment of having BNP leader Nick Griffin as one of their European representatives after his share of the vote collapsed from 8% to below 2%.

My home region of Yorkshire also rid themselves of their BNP representative after an even more dramatic decline in their share of the vote from 9.8% down to just 1.6%.

We can all have our suspicions about where the majority of the BNP vote evaporated to, especially given disgraced former Tory MP turned UKIP bigwig Neil Hamilton's claims that UKIP attracts "decent" BNP voters, and Nick Griffins accusations that "they [UKIP] are using all of our rhetoric, they are using our slogans, they are recycling our posters and people like it".

Even though their vote seems to have been stolen by another right wing party, it's still good to see the BNP get pretty much wiped off the map as a political force.
